Memory Installation Problem

I recently bought 2gigs of ram from crucial.com. From what I understand, my computer can handle it. When I installed the ram and tried to turn my computer on, it had one long beep and four short beeps. Nothing happened afterward except for my fan coming on once. The ram is good because I tried each by themselves. I also tried 1.5 gigs in the system which also had the same failing results. It is also as if the slots won't work together. Any suggestions???

I have the same problem trying to install over 1gb of ram. I tried tech support at Crucial, and they told to me to contact Toshiba to find out why the system won't expand to 2gb of ram. I am running Vista Home Premium with service pack 1 installed.
    Thanks

I have had the same problem. Toshiba told me that the Celeron can only support 1GB, the Pentium can support 2 GB

I have a Toshiba Satellite A55-S106 that says by manufacture it has a maxium memory upgrade of 2 gig. I have put both 1 gig of memory in each slots and turned the power on nothing happens. I took one of the memory card out both are 1 gig each and my computer powers on. Mind you while i was doing all of this I a sitting at the desk of Best Buy Geek Squad. So I bought two of the same gig cards thinking my orginial mem card was not communicating with the other. After a few exchanges I still go the same results. I left with the 1 gig that it accepted the first time. Any suggestion my email address is [email protected]

How much ram can i upgrade my compaq presario? I keep getting conflicting info. The tech at Office Depot said I was maxed out 2Gigs and upgrading any more would shut it down. But I'm reading forums...

One good and easy way to find out for sure how much RAM your computer can hold is to go to WWW.CRUCIAL.COM and run their SCAN MY COMPUTER feature.

This handy utility will scan your hardware configuration and tell you exactly how much RAM you currently have installed and what type it is.

It will also tell you how many RAM slots are fitted on your motherboard and what the maximum memory capacity is for each slot and the total capacity for that motherboard.

If your computer does have room to add more RAM, it will provide you with specific recommendations as to exactly what type and size of RAM stick to get to maximize the memory capacity and performance of your computer.

I hope that was helpful to you, good luck.

How do I install additonal memory on my ASUS N53SV-A1?

You can buy the memory here:
http://www.memorystock.com/ram/ASUSN53SVA1NotebookRAM.html

Here is how to install it:

Although the second link is not specific to your laptop, the way to install memory is relatively generic

Some motherboards are only upgradable to their allotted amount that board may only handle up to 2 gigs of RAM which is a shame. But this is the way it is. That is why I always check the board memory capacity before I buy computer boards or RAM for them. The beeps indicate error on the slots for the RAM that is why you can start up when you remove ram one at a time and replace. So use the allotted amount of RAM for that board specification or get another mother board that can handle more than 2 gigs of RAM. Sorry for the loss. Thanks for using FixYa! John

You could make sure you bought compatible RAM sticks.. here what Crucial.cm suggests:

http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/eMachines/d3123

Also let Windows handle virtual memory settings, and blow out all the cooling fins on the processor's heatsink. Hope that helps.

Am I better off buying a new desktop or upgrading the 512 mem to 2 gig?

IMHO you are far better with the RAM option.

It is a decent spc otherwise for most purpose.

A good cleanup is also always a good starting point.
remove any unused items etc as this will have almost as much benefit as ram itself.

How can my computer recognize my new ram i insert?

If it is the correct RAM the System should recognize it automatically. Window on the other hand sometimes get it wrong, To see how much RAM you really have is check as it boots up, that will give you the correct amount. OR again check in BIOS.

Memory not being detected while in Windows

If you are running a 32bit OPERATING SYSTEM it won't recognize but I gig.Only if you install a 64bit OS will it see the 2 gigs of ram.Thats why it shows up in the BIOS and not in your OS.If you do have a 64bit OS already then your OS should read the 2gigs.

I have a Gateway laptop computer with XP. It originally had 512mbs of memory. I bought 2gigs of memory and installed it. It worked lightening-fast for about one day. Here is what happened: My wife...

I was initially confused about the addition of the Dell laptop in the plot before realizing what you are saying:

I think its your RAM. Did you ground yourself while removing or replacing the ram to prevent static shock from damaging the device or memory sticks?

If not, try getting another 512 stick (pretty cheap) from best buy for your gateway and testing it out. Save the receipt.

Also, post the model of your gateway laptop as some computers can not handle large amounts of ram. Most will only allow up to 2x the original amount.

crucial wasn't the problem.
the problem was solved by me doing a bios update.
they shipped the unit with the pci configured for 1 gig.
not 1.5,2,3 or 4.
I had to go for broke and pray that the 63af08 update had something in it,they said nothing about a memory upgrade period!
