The problem is likely that you are using 8x/2x media. Though the booklet does not say it, the burner does not support anything above 4x for DVD-R and 1x for DVD-RW. Calling their tech support can (possibly) get an update for this problem. Otherwise, the burner cannot use anything but outdated media.

CLEANING THE DISC LENS ? If this unit still does not perform properly although you refer to the relevant sections and to ?TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE? in this Owner?s Manual, the laser optical pickup unit may be dirty. hi... the problem might be in ur dvd... If ur dvd is perfect and u found that ur player has some problem means the best solution is that to clean up ur dvd player lense which plays a vital role in reading ur dvd when u insert into it...For cleaning up ur lense all u need is a lense cleaner dvd available in electronic shops.. u can purchase it and play that dvd as normal one.. ur problem will get solved..

First, insert the DVD into the recorder.
Then, try double-click on OPEN/CLOSE button on the remote control. You have to make it very quick - two quick clicks on the same button. If done correctly, you will first see OPEN, then CLOSE in the right corner of the screen.
When done successfully, the unit will recognize the DVD again (if the burner has not failed totally.)
I tried that with RD-XS55 (it has the same DVD-RAM drive as RD-XS35.) It is not perfect solution, but it might help temporarily. In my situation, it bring my dvd drive back to "life," so I do not need to do double-click all the time.
Let's face it, your burner is dying whether you like it or not. And new replacement would cost you around $200.
