Question about Dell Inspiron 6400 Notebook

Very low audio

Im having problem w/my sound its super low i've turned it up as loud as possible and can barely hear it it was fine couple days a go help!
oh yeah its a Del inspiron 6400 i call it a laptop but know thats what they dont call anymore as you may tell im computer illiterate. thanks Tim

    i did as you instructed when i looked in volume control: volume control is @ highest setting, In Wave is @ lowest setting, in the S W synth is @ middle setting, inthe CD player is @ highest setting. everything else in volume control is @ highest level even the speakers. I have all the volume turned up on my computer but it comes out very low barely able to hear it. how can i check if something was erased and then possibly restored oh by the way i went to a restore point b 4 this happened and didnt fix problem. thanks Tim

    In wiindows go to the control panel and open the sounds and audio icon. Don't change too much just one at a time to see what the problem might be. Correct audio speakers, audio levels not muted?

    Everything is the same? Is the audio jack plugged into the external speakers all the way? Are the external speakers okay?

Hi Sir's / Mam,

In order to resolve your issue you would need to do the following steps:-

1.Update latest BIOS and sound drivers.

click on this URL and before any steps are done please save your work and also check in BIOS battery charge should be more than 10% in BIOS and Ac Adapter should be connected and make sure that there should be no power failure during this process.

Update the Sound drivers:-

After the BIOS update try to update the sound driver on the link mentioned above.Even after both the updates don't give results call Dell Tech Support and based on the HW warranty get the motherboard replaced.

Also try and connect to external speaker and see if the issue is same or different??

AC Airflow is greatly restricted in all vents


Based on your description I would say you have a blend door that is sticking or the control motor is going bad. The blend doors control air flow.

  • It's all by ear. Every person is different. I like to turn the low up all the way. That's the base. I turn the highs almost all the way up and the mid levels midway between the middle and all the way to the top. above midway. This makes it loud with bass and the high pitch of a tweeter so you can hear the words and instrumentals and the mid levels can be heard still. This is best served for rock and rap. Classical and jazz you want the highs all the way up and the mid levels about midway and the lows about half way between all the way and midway. this make it loud but puts the emphasis on the instrumentals.

My laptop is playing sound at a very low level. All the volume controls are turned up to the max, but I can barely hear anything through the built-in speakers or through earbuds. Toshiba Satellite A101...


Usually what happens hear is that a program such as media player or a dvd player will have its volume turned down and that overides the overall volume.

The trick is finding it. You need to open up any and all programs you have used with some kind of volume control and check they are turned up then close them.

You will never get super loud sound on your speakers but they should be easily heard. I've run across this on both my tosh laptop and a desktop.

that should be fine, but with that much power you might want to invest in earplugs, the SPL or sound pressure level from those speakers could rip your ear drums out of your head, kick them around for awhile, spit on them and shove them back in through your nose.
**Disclaimer, I am not a medical doctor and do not claim to be, I am simply warning you about hearing loss as I have suffered from between 30 - 50% hearing loss because of loud bass. but seriously, if the speakers sound like """" turn it down a little bit. that system should work fine though.

Earphone plug is not working


do your speakers have their own volume knob? sounds like its turned way down,master volume in control panel under audio devices,also volume controll in the sound card software ,nvidia,realtek,maestro,ect. whitch ever one you have,if they are all turned up ,try turning it up useing your hotkeys on your keyboard,if none of that works,uninstall all of your audio drivers,and reinstall them from the support web site at hp.com,the wires that go to that headphone jack inside are very small,doesnt take much to damage them,droping it a couple times is enough,reinstalling the software is the best chance,if that doesnt do anything ,you will have to go inside,if this only happens when your using the optical drive then disregard everything i just said,and replace it.make sure its locked in securely

sounds like a sound driver issue to me...... go to device manager and re-intall the audio drivers, reboot the machine if you hear the windows start up audio, your problem should be solved

I'd make sure that the receiver surround mode is set for one of the digital settings, such as Dolby Digital or DTS, and make sure that you have the center channel level adjusted to a level similar to the other two front channel speakers. I've seen/heard this happening when using dolby digital material & having surround set on something like 'hall' or 'stadium' or dolby surround, where only 4 channels are used & the amp has to 'mix' sounds to the left & right front speakers. It'll often sound like the actors on screen are talking out of the bottom of a barrel, with a hollow & tinny character to the voices.
