It cud be because of a mismatched or defective harddrive component...thats why it freezes ur computer..try ur hard drive with another computer to rule out if there is a problem with ur hard drive...then update me

Thanks for using Fixya!

Well you will have to back-up the files first by using a file recovery tool while the HDD is in another machine. once it is retrieved, format the HDD then reinstall your OS, then load the files you had in it previously, or re-load a snap-shot of the HDD before formatting. im speaking generally okay, this may depend on how the HDD was locked.

Try to run a scan disk utility on the drive and that should take care of the issue.

It should be. does the computer locks up even when the hard drive is not plugged in

If your computer is getting locked up as soon as you plug in the hard drive. Than the first step would be to check the same Hard Drive on another computer and backup the data if you get the access to it.

If your computer is freezing up otherwise as well. Than it could be spywares on the computer.
In that case download the free superantispyware software from here and do a complete scan on your computer.

Also see if your harddrive does not show up in the My Computer, than it could be an issue with the harddrive. In this case try changing the cable and use different ports on the computer. (Try to check the hard drive on other computer).
Else you will have to take to vendor.

Maxtor External drive is "clicking"

No, the defect is in the actual hard disk inside your unit - it's the clicking of death.
There is nothing left to do, the unit is unfixable. Just get a new one.

External Usb Hard Drive Data Recovery

Have a external Hard drive? Does not power on or the computer does not find it? Do these steps below for your fix.

Folks I am going to demonstrate to you how to save your data on your failed external usb hard drive.

The Videos below will show you how to retrieve the hard drive out of a My book 1TB drive. This method can be used for all external hard drives as there all basically SATA drives.

1. You need a flat head screw driver.
2. You take the drive in your hand and you pry it open around the sides and back there are no screws on this drive.
3. Once you got it open you basically follow the steps below in the video and what you can do is put this hard drive inside of another case or directly into the computer.

The videos are kinda dark but you can basically see and hear what I am doing here folks.

When you follow my video's here you will have a fix as long as the drive is not crashed. Opening the drive up VOIDS the warranty for the drive so please if you have a warranty and care less about the data sent it back to the manufacture.

I hope you find these video's helpful

How does a external hard drive work, and does it make my computer run better, I have purchased one but I am confused on how it works.

An external Hard drive is used to store information in any format. Ususally it is connected to USB, but it may happen that it is connected to either e-sata, which is the fastest or firewire.
when connector is inserted into the socket (USB, e-sata, firewire) Windows will automatically detect it. You can find your external Hard drive in My Computer, normally labeled removable drive. You can then double click it to access the information on the drive, or copy information to the drive. This means you can easily make a back up of all your files. Now if you so wish you can store it for backup purposes or you can use it to transfer information, contained on it, to another Computer/Laptop. An external Hard drive does not make your computer faster, but it does in a sense make your computer perform better,as it takes away the need for that data to be stored of your main boot hard drive. Therefore making virus scans on your PC run quicker and your PC has more space on it's main boot hard drive to perform tasks if it needs to.

Please rate my expertise, it's the thumbs up on the top right hand side of this solution.
Thanks

Hard drive failure in system less than 2 years old!!

Since you are comfortable with working inside your computer, the best thing to do now is to purchase an external enclosure for your type of hard drive, SATA or EIDE.

Alternately you can use a live linux cd, boot up with that, and transfer your data to an external drive.

Once your data is safe, try booting to the Windows cd and attempt a repair installation.

And finally, yes, hard drives can go bad in 2 years or less.

How to reformat without loosing wanted data??

best way to do this would be one of two options.

First copy all your wanted data onto a CD / DVD (DVD RW best) and then once you've reformated your pc copy them back onto your desktop

The next option would be to buy an external harddrive. These are great because you can just move all the data you want back and force between your computer and external harddrive. This might be your best choice but it is a bit more costly

Reinstall software to use my 160GB freeAgent Go USB

Hi, I am assuming that you are referring to a USB based external hard drive called Free Agent, by Seagate I think.

Which operating system are you using ?

Windows XP has native support for USB, and it should automatically detect the hard drive when you plug it in.
It should NOT require any other software to access the drive.

if not:
1) Check that the HD is powered up
2) Try a different USB cable
3) Try a different USB socket

4) Make sure that the HARD drive is correctly formatted:
i.e. Assuming you are running Windows XP
(Vista should have similar facilities)

Goto to the Control Panel -->
Double click on Administrative Tools
Double click on Computer Management
Look down, under storage,
Click on "Disk Management"
Give it a couple seconds to search for drives,
and to populate the list ...

Check to see if the external disk appears in the list:
It should be partitioned with an EXTENDED partition,
containing a LOGICAL drive, and formatted with NTFS.

If necessary, partition and format the drive, assuming
you have not already done so, and the drive does not
contain any data.

If the drive did previously contain your data, you can
either loose the data and re-format it, or you can hire
a data recovery company to repair the damaged drive.
