This is my second time using the Hard drive, this evening it work, the tonight my computer folder just stopped recognizing it. I have the 500GB Hard drive, I did everything that people suggested. I really need to use the Hard drive, i tried hooking it up to another comp. and even that comp. recognized it, but the my comp. folder refused to show the device.

I have the same problem and has nothing to do with being formated in
Vista since I only have XP and it was pre formated fat 32 from
factory. The drive does not appear at all as mounted and even
after disconnecting and pluging it back windows does not see it.

It was working fine for about a month and today it began to stop showing as mounted.

    I hope somebody can help.

    Thanks

I have the exact same problem. It occurred only about 2 weeks ago and I've been trying to figure it out. I have the 1tb Essential edition, and like the originator, my life is on it. I don't mean that figuratively. All my music is on there and I DJ, this prevents me from being able to do anything.

I too went through the Chkdsk, reboot, etc for a 500GB MyBook whick an HP laptop running XP couldn't see. Lucyfr's simple solution "try unplugging it completely, putting the USB in THEN the power supply" finally worked! So simple I nearly wept.

Hi guys,

I don't know if this will help you but just had same infuriating problem with my Western Digital Essential Book 250GB.
I wiped my PC and reinstalled windows and hey presto! It couldn't see my drive and I tried for a while pulling out the USB and trying different ports...
I connected it to my laptop and got the same problem, had a fit and pulled the mains plug and then plugged it back in... And it kicked in! I put it back on the PC (USB in but power off, then plugged it in the mains) and it kicked in there too.
Therefore I suggest trying the drive with another system to boot it. Once the laptop recognised it, so then did the PC. Also try unplugging it completely, putting the USB in THEN the power supply...

Might have just been a fluke but hope it helps someone here...!

We had a simmilar problem, the disk was initialised with vista. It does not read on any other computor on our network. I recently aquired a second vista computor and tried it out on that. Sure enough it works. Thus the problem is that if it was initialised on vista, only vista systems will read it and not xp or 2000. hopes this helps

- try plug in a normal usb port (usb2)

- try open up the device manager, look for your WD and delete it.
then unplug and plug back.

try goto control panels->administrative tools->computer management->disk management
and see if your wd appears there. if yes, try change the drive letter assignment.

I fixed that problem with a WDC My Book Home 1TB in Windows 7:

The drive was recognized in computer management and in device manager but no drive letter was allocated while connected with a e-sata cable.

1.in computer management > storage > disk management
2.rightclick drive 1 or wathever the number of the WDC drive (which should be basic at this time)
3.select 'convert to dynamic disk'
4.drive should get a drive letter
5.format (warning: all data get lost, but you can download original software from wdc.com)

Succes!

You will need to try formatting the drive. You can do this from the drive management section on the Mac.

My e book 500 GB IS NOT DETECTED BY MY COMPUTER JUST APPEAR LIKE USB MASS STORAGE AND WD BUT NOT LIKE E:

Rt Click My Computer, Manage, Device Manager and in the Rt side, highlight the TOP icon. Then under Help, click the Computer with magnifying glass i con aand wait. This forces your OS to 'Look' for any new devices.

When it finishes, close the window and see if your new HDD popped up under My Computer

If not, Rt Click My Computer, Manage, Disk Manager... or Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk Manager and see if it is there. You may have to Rt. Click and import it as a foreign drive or Rt click and give it a Driveletter ;-)

If RtClicking My Computer doesn't work, Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk Manager to get there.

Windows doesn't like 'foreign disks' so ANY time this happens, if OS doesn't see it, use disk manager and Import it.

My Book Essential does not show on My Computer - Can't access files.

No matter what I tried, I ws unable to get my "MyBook" working. My solution? Remove from case and voila, it's just a seial ATA drive attached to a small circuit board which converts it to USB. Disconnect from the circuitboard and plug into the motherboard. Imstant success. It failed as an external drive three weeks after the warranty ran out. WD support was zero help.
