Let windows boot in Safe Mode and log in to windows.

Go to 'Start'--->Programs--->Accessories--->System Tools--->System Restore

Here you will have to check "Restore computer to an earlier time' and click Next
Now you will find one Month Calendar window with Dates below, go to the last month by clicking the '<' sign in the upper left hand corner of the Month Calendar and select any date that you see in Bold.

To resolve the issue, Please perform the following steps:

Step 2 : Disable the "Automatically Restart" under System Failure:

1. Click Start, right-click the My Computer icon, then Properties.
2. Click the Advanced tab, then Settings in the Startup & Recovery section.
3. Remove the check mark next to Automatically Restart under System Failure.
4. Click OK to close the Startup and Recovery window, then click OK to close the System Properties window.
5. Restart the computer.

My hp note book stops responding during on

if it is when starting the comupter then you may have attached any hardware which is not compatible with the computer. So, remove any external devices or recently attached devices.
If the computer stops responding after you enter the user ID and password, then it is due to another program which is blocking the functionality of the computer. You can perform a clean boot to resolve this issue.

CDR/DVD R Drive Repair

First of all, I would recommend you to copy the movies or audio files to the Hard Drive and play from there as it is not totally recommended to play audio or video files from the DVD Drives directly which may reduce its life span.

For DVD Videos, you need to copy the Video_Ts folder which containt the video files.

Sort out the files according to file types and files with .Vob are the video files which can be played.

However, if you are not comfirtable with the above instructions, try the steps listed below which I use to resolve this kind of issues :

Step 1:

1. Click Start.
2. Right-click My Computer (My Computer is on the Desktop for versions of Windows prior to Windows XP).
3. Click Properties.
4. Click the Hardware tab.
5. Click the Device Manager button (Device Manager is a tab in versions of Windows prior to Windows XP).
6. Click the plus sign (+) to the left of IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers to expand this list.
7. Right-click Secondary IDE Channel.
8. Click Uninstall (Click Delete for versions of Windows prior to Windows XP).
9. Restart the computer.
10. Repeat steps 1-7.
11. Click Properties.
12. Click the Advanced Settings tab.

Verify that the transfer modes for both Device 0 and Device 1 are set to DMA if available.
13. Click OK and try playing a DVD.

i) The current transfer mode should read some thing like "Multi Word DMA Mode 2" or "Ultra DMA Mode 5" under Advanced Settings tab after this.
ii) The above procedure applies only to certain model notebooks. If the Secondary IDE is not listed, then this step will not help resolve the issue.

Step 2:

DMA setting will not stay enabled after rebooting (OR) switches back to PIO from DMA during startup:
IN this case, Please download/install of Notebooks Windows XP Registry Patch to Reset DVD Mode from PIO to DMA from:

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp20501-21000/SP20531.exe

Step 3:

You may experience stutter, echo, or distorted sound if the hardware acceleration is not set correctly. To experience good audio quality, adjust the hardware acceleration slider for speaker in the Device Manger by following these steps:

1. Click Start and then Control Panel.
2. Click Sounds and Audio Devices.
3. Under Speaker settings, click Advanced.
4. Click the Performance tab.
5. Change the Hardware Acceleration slider's position.

NOTE: The slider can be positioned from "none" to "full" depending on the usage.

6. Click Apply and OK.

Repeat steps 5 & 6 till you get optimum audio performance.

Step 4 :
BIOS Reset
1. Restart the notebook.
2. Tap the F10 key as soon as the HP logo appears.
3. Using the arrow keys, navigate to Exit menu and select Get defaults values.
4. Navigate to Exit menu and select Save Changes and Exit.

Even this steps look lengthy, they should resolve the issues.
