WD my book making faint ticking noises and flashing

Does this mean that the internal hard drive has mechanical problems or the external housing that supplies power?

It is possibly because the usb port you are connecting to is not receiving enough power to power the hard drive and use it at the same time. try another port or check on another computer else probably have to buy a new one

How do you put new motor in ex hard drive ?

The motor is inside the sealed hard drive case. Replacing the mechanical motor is impossible without a clean room. Dust will destroy the drive. Try and transfer the data off of the drive as soon as possible. Then check the warranty status here:

My external is making a faint tick, tick, tick

I am sorry to inform you that your drive is failing. Normally drives will start with a faint ticking then move onto a solid clicking sound and maybe even a grinding noise. You will need to backup all of the data on that drive and then download the diagnostic utilities from your drive's manufacture and run the testing tool. If you can hear any ticking there is a very good chance the drive will fail the diagnostic tests. Assuming it fails you will then be able to RMA your drive for a working one as long as it is still under the warranty period. If your drive passes all the testing from the manufacture's tool I would advise you backup your data from that drive regularly and run the diagnostics weekly until it throws and error code.

I cannot retrieve my files from the wd 250gb

First instinct is that your drive has failed. I would remove the drive and insert it into a system to test. If it works, then it is the housing from the external drive that failed. If the drive does not work once inside your system, then the drive is bad. Good luck.

sounds like you are using the wrong power supply. Check the amp output on the power plug you plug into the wall make sure its the same as the amp input of your external harddrive

My computer won't recognize my wd my book 500g hard drive. I think it overheated and now is making noise (internal relay switching) It sounds like it's trying to turn on and off but it is on!! What can I...

There can be 3 possible problems since you hear the clicking sound. 1 is that the drive is not receiving enough power from the power supply and it is attempting to turn on. 2nd is the controller board is damaged and 3rd is the drive itself is damaged. From my experience with WD external drives. the 3rd is my best guess. One thing you can try is to buy an external chassis for the hard drive and take the hard drive out of the My Book and put it in the chassis to see if it works. Get one from a place with a good returning policy would also be good as well

My Book

No, this is just the little reader head getting the data off of the storage discs. One thing about WD Drives, is that they are not know for their silence. I have on of the 1tb My book drives, and when it powers on, or is in use it sounds like a tank is driving through my computer cabinet.
