I also used to have an xperia u and it also produced the same problem. First i tried to simply reinstall the whole operation system on it, this you can do through the sony update service software via your pc. If this does not help, (and this helped me only once) next time i simply took apart the phone, and tried to clean it checked the contacts within it (all the copper parts). After putting the device back together, my camera was working again. For the taking apart process you will need special tiny screw drivers.

This is a good way to reset your phone if it has any bugs in it that
the updates don't fix. Remember to save any contacts or important
pictures with the PC Suite. I didn't really know what PC suite was
before, but it's a program from Nokia that you install on your PC.
Using that and the data cable, you can backup important info or
settings on your phone.
I'm having the same problem. I called ATT and they are going to replace it via the insurance (I thought they only replaced lost phones). I've had it about 1 1/2 years. It says the memory is full but I did a master reset and even deleted some games.
