You may need to install the drivers for the devices you lost after you wiped out your drive, try running the cd that came with your motherboard if the sound card is built in on the mobo.

you could also download the drivers online through the mobo's manufacturer site.
if your computer is not online yet download it to a computer that can go online and place the drivers on a thumb drive or a CD then run it on your computer.

Are you using Windows? This sounds like there is a problem with your boot sector and Windows is asking you to enter Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, etc.
You can put in your Windows installation CD, if you have one, and repair the bootsector with the utility available on the disc.
If you save files to My Documents or anywhere else on the C: drive you could lose them if you have to reinstall Windows. You can reinstall Windows without deleting your files, WinXP only I believe. If you have to reinstall a factory image then that will overwrite everything on the target partition or drive.
Alternatively, you can use an external hard drive case to hook the hard drive up to then connect it to another computer. This will allow you to browse your hard drive contents and back up any important files that you have before reinstall your operating system.

No sound on this computer had to reinstall windows XP.

You will not have sound without reinstalling the driver for it. Also, many other items will not be functioning properly until you reinstall the drivers. Go to your start menu and find "Windows Update". Click on it and do everything it asks you to do. If it asks you if you want to run Windows Update Express or Custom, pick CUSTOM. This will take a while. When it is done it should show you many, many updates available. Make sure to click "Hardware" on the left side under optional updates. This will usually have the drivers for your Sound and many other items. Check them all then "Review and Install Updates" Since you just reinstalled XP there will be close to 100 items (at least). You can uncheck everything but your Hardware drivers if you want to do those first!

You say you have re installed windows.
Was this from your recovery/reload disc ?
If it was then your drivers should be included and installed.
If it was from a standard copy of windows, you will need to visit the HP support page and download your audio drivers IF they are available for the version of windows you have installed.

Emachine motherboard no model number

Check out this site provided for a program called SIW. Download the free english version and install. It will tell you everything about your computer that you ever needed to know. Check the motherboard section for your specifics, and try the sound card section to see teh specifics on your card. This will help you in your search for the correct drivers.

WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER SOUNDS BAD

download real player, if everything sounds good with real player, uninstall windows media player and reinstall it. If you keep reinstalling it ontop of itself the issue will not get fixed. Its probably a media codec issue.
