Resetting the Computer (HP Pavilion dv1000)

I was told that by pressing F10 while starting my computer the whole system would go back to factory settings.
It did not turn out to be that easy, when I press F10 I'm brought in to a menu with various choices, but I don't know what to choose.
I want to clean my hard drive and get it back to how it was when I brought it back from the store. Does anybody have a simple solution to this, is the answer in the F10 menu?

Thank you

This is the page I get when pressing F10:

As for CDs I got with my computer I have "HP Quickplay Application
Restore", "Oppeationalsystem-CD Microsoft, Windows XP Home SP2",
"Application and Driver Recovery DVD" and "Notebook Documentation".

Which ones should I use if I want to clean or reset my computer... how
do I do it. Is there some idiot's guide to do it, because I really
don't want to mess up my computer.

Hello RogueM,

By pressing F10 at the notebook startup will lead you to the BIOS settings screen.
DV1000 notebook is hsipped with restore disks. With which you can clean your hard drive and install fresh copy of operating system.

The option for going directly to factory settings is not available on your notebook. This option works when the notebook is shipped with the recovery partiion.

You can clean the hard drive even if you have the retail version of operating disk with you.

Double click "My Compter" In the window that opens you should see your harddrive "C" if you see another harddrive listed usually "D" with HP or Compaq as the name then that is the recovery partition for your computer and that is what F10 is going to use to restore your machine.
What options are you being given? it has been a while since I did one of these.

That picture shows the BIOS screnn, if you are getting that when you press F10 then I think you can assume that you don't have a recovery partition and you will need to restore your laptop using the recovery disks.

You will need to put the Windows disk in the CD drive and restart the machine, then follow the on screen instructions.

This is a link to the service manual for your machine, it's a little over complicated for what you want but if you follow the flow chart in paragraph 2.14 (no OS) it will run you through the complete reinstall procedure.

How do I restore my hp pavilion ze5185 to factory setting

Where are a number of way to do this on a Pavillion. However, HP has not standardized this procedure. The following are three ways they have setup to do it.

Turn on the computer.
When the initial blue HP screen appears Press the "F10" key.
A Recovery menu will appear.
Click on "NEXT" and then click on "YES"
Your system will now go through the product recovery

Starting recovery within Windows XP
From the Desktop, click "START".
You will now be asked "Do you really want to start HP PC System Recovery?"
Click on "YES" to continue.
Your system will now go through the product recovery.

on start up try clicking F10 for System recovery.

Sorry for any confusion but I am not HP.

Hope this helps you.

Good Luck!

The laptop keeps restarting itself. Then when it reaches the log on screen the screen goes blue and says it has detected a problem. Hen Restarts again.

Click Start and Open the Control Panel 2. Go to System and Maintenance, Click on System. 3. Select Advanced System Settings and choose Advance tab. 4. Under Startup and Recovery, click on Settings. 5. Under System failure uncheck Automatically restart. Another cause for random reboots is that the computers processor is getting too hot. To check this, enter the computers bios during boot (usually by pressing Delete, F1 or F10 when the computer just starts) and there will be an option about the computers temperature (often under "PC Health"). U can have registry error.Run a registry cleaner reg in out .

The screen remains black when computer is turned

maybe a hardware problem, on booting the pc, move the screen to every angle to see if there is a connection problem.
If so, then use your warranty if you have one.

Pavilion dv1000 PC Notebook: i want to restore laptop to factory...

I guess that you no if a recovery is done on the computer there will be a data loss you will have only those things that came with the computer.Ther are two ways to run a recovery one is from the disk and the other one is from the partition.First let me tell you how to run the recovery fromt the partition .

Turn the computer off and then disconnect any external devices connected to the computer like printer, scanner, usb devices etc. Then when you turn the computer on or leets say as soon as you press the power button to turn the computer on start tapping the f11 key repeatedly without stopping until you get a screen that says system recovery in xp and recovery manager in vista ,then click on next until you get a screen that has advance option, once you are there click on it and then select system recovery and click on next.Recovery will start automatically and then the computer restarts then you need to do the basic setup for the computer .Will take you to the dsktop after that.

If this does not work then you need to get the recover cd by either calling up HP or there is a company called COMPUTER SURGEONS and the phone number is 1800-486-6127.

all the best.....

My laptop HP Pavilion dv1000 is not working so I pressed F10 for the Bios Setup Utility went to tools to do a Hard Drive Self Test and the Test Status is #1-07 Fail. What does that mean?

Hi there.
The error code means the drive has failed or that Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology, or S.M.A.R.T is faulty.

Go back into the bios and disable the
S.M.A.R.T, hit F10, save the changes and try to boot again.
Please post back with the results.

Good luck
