If you still have the original disks that came with the computer one of them should be labeled for device drivers and you should be able to put that in your optical drive (CD or DVD reader) and reinstall the drivers for your audio recording device. If you do not have that disk you can go to the Acer web site and down load the driver for the audio device, or try this website: http://drivers.softpedia.com/downloadTag/Acer+Aspire5050 just make sure you choose the correct operating system (Vista or XP)
I'm assuming you have run the Operating System ie Full XP disc. Really depends what you mean by 'won't start up properly'. Sounds like it could be your operating system has not installed correctly. You need to try formatting and reinstalling it - sometimes when the operating system is installed it drops a file or two.
