Question about Olympus D-400 Zoom Digital Camera

Olympus D-400 Battery Cover

Battery cover came off. Does not appear broken. However, unable to put it back on slide. Looks like the case has to somehow be loosened.

Regrding Olympus Stylus 500.. When turned on the lens cover opens half way twice then closes with a green flashing light and beeping sound.

Have just solved similar problem with mine. Problem turned out to be that the lens cover was very slightly dented in. It didn't really look dented at all, but just wasn't quite symmetrical and was a bit more recessed on the side away from the shutter button. This was causing it to rub on the case when it tried to slide. (Mine had been not sliding completely shut for a while before it stopped opening properly too).

To fix it I undid two small cross head screws which let the front panel be prised off. On mine, with the front panel off, the lens and lens cover mechanism all worked perfectly, as the problem was that the lens cover was rubbing on the front panel. If yours is still broken with the front panel removed, then your problem is not the same as mine...

I used a small screwdriver to push out the metal bar on which the top of the lens cover slides, pushing on the right hand end of the bar to slide it left and out through the USB connector compartment door. That lets the top of the cover come off the bar and move freely. To take the cover off, it has to be detached from the arm which moves it. There is a pivot trapped in a slot in the arm, but once the cover is off the bar at the top, it can be moved down so that the pivot reaches the bigger hole at the bottom end of the slot in the arm. This lets the whole lens cover come off the camera.

I then used a screwdriver to gently push out the middle of the cover until its shape was more symmetrical. (I'm not sure a screwdriver was ideal for this, as there are now tiny lumps in the cover where I was pushing it).

Putting it back together was the reverse of taking it apart, although you can test whether it's fixed or not before doing up the screws holding the front panel on.

The latch on the camera door is broken. Can it be replaced?

Replacement covers on their own rarely surface on ebay, but you might be lucky and find a "donor" camera with a working cover - it will probably work out cheaper than trying to order directly from olympus or their parts department.
The battery cover is attached to the back cover of the camera, you'll need to unscrew it (make sure you take notes of which screws go where as they are not the same).
Hope this helps,
Good luck,

I have a olympus 400 mju camera i cannot seem to get the lens back in to close the cover now i have fitted a new battery

This normally happens when dirt or dust particles get caught between the lens segments. Check for this. If you can't do it yourself, take it to the nearest authorized service center.

Broken battery compartment door switch

The switch is a micro switch that is depressed(and not sad :)) by a plastic tag moulded on the battery cover. Once the cover is moved into position and closed, the tag presses on the micro switch closing the switch and thus removing the error message. As with any switch, a switch is simply open or closed, Open = high resistance or O/L, while closed = 0 ohms reistance. You can use a small wire to overcome the switch by soldering the wire to both tags of the switch so it is permenantly 0 ohms. This will send a message to the microprocessor that cover is closed and camera ready for use. Hope this helps.

Broken track

I have the same problem. I contacted Olympus and it is 29.95 plus tax to repair. Right now I am getting around the problem by holding the cover and controlling it as I open or close to make sure the camera turns off and on.

I purchased a second reconditioned camera from Olympus on the auction site for $35.00 and it arrived yesterday.

It comes with everything except a remote. The battery is the newer L12B. Considering the cost of a replacement OEM battery and the camera looks new, it seemed to be the best work around to having the camera repaired.

I keep it because I have the underwater case for this model and to buy a case for another camera is big bucks..

Hi X,
There's a little piece of plastic on the battery cover, that presses a switch when you slide the cover closed. Check that manually with a tooth pick and the the battery in place. Don't smash it. I have a Olympus FE -280 and it only happens when I put the cheap Chinese battery in.
If you are in the least uncertain, call Customer Service.
Best regards, Paul

Got a problem with the lense

I had the same problem with mine after it had been dropped on the ground.  I undid the two screws at the bottom which holds the sliding lens cover on and took the cover off.  Check the small black lever inside.  It might be broken.  I replaced the part from an older model and but the cover back on.  I works fine now.  I hope this helps

Cover open, unable to take a picture?

The cover opens in two positions. To completely open the lens cover for shooting images, slide the lens cover over until you hear two clicks. When the camera is on the first position, you can playback images.
