The TV is about 3 years old. Its a plasma and has no been subject to any movement or power outages. It has been going black lately for a brief second while watching a movie but the ambilight and sound is never interupted. It would go black and then within 3 seconds it would come back on. In this case I turned it off at night and then came home from work the next afternoon and no picture. Just sound and ambilight. There is no flashing redlights on the bottom left just the green light that indicates the power is on.

At the risk of sounding like an idiot, what is the "LCD". I have heard of LCD tv's but this is a Plasma TV.

Sounds like if its flat screen the lcd went out. The flickering was the screen having to reset itself. Try un plugging it for 40 min. and trying it again. could possibly re-set it again but 90% chance the Lcd is out. if its not lcd and its rear projection the the projector has died.

Can be replaced for about 1/2the price of a new one today.

Good luck

SIr you don't sound remotely idiotic, i apologize for not explaining,

Definition of LCD. LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)

    Explanation.

The Lcd or Plasma Screen is the glass insert you view you picture on,

and is made up of tiny little light bulbs that produce a picture.

Lcd is just a short term for the screen, thus i was suggesting

you purchase a replacement screen identical to the one you own,

removing the defective equipment and placing all electrical components

not included in your replacement such as the Green driver boards that

are the memory of the tv and its brains on how to produce the picture.

I should place this WARNING though, to inform you also, if you

yourself preform any replacements or modifications to this tv in anyway

not authorized by your dealer you will in fact Void any warranty.

The diffrence between a plasma screen tv and the bigger rear projection is the

display method. Lcd has combined the projection part directly into the screen,

rear projection projects the image onto the screen similar to how a camera takes photos.

I hope this helps you understand sir, and i appologize again for the short terms.

    Good Luck

    And thank you

Sounds like you have the wrong input selected for where you have it plugged in. Turn on the TV and the source(cable box, DVD...etc.) On the remote locate the input or the source button. Press that until you get a picture and sound.

Philips widescreen flat TV model #50PF9966-37 50" plasma, as the tv warms up a loud hissing sounds comes from the back. The hissing sound does not go away when you mute the broadcast sound. when you change...

From what I'm seeing online, the bulbs in the Ambilight may be the culprit. I also read that a firmware upgrade could fix the issue too. There was also a recall of some TV's with that issue, so I would check with Philips about your model and serial number and see if your TV was included in the recall. If you raise enough cain and threaten to never buy from them again, they may get your set fixed for you... even if the warranty is up!

Good luck and please post feedback!

No sound

There are two quick things to try:
1) The TV's speakers may be turned off. To turn on: Press MENU, select "Sound Settings", select "Internal Speakers", then select "On" (as opposed to "Off"), and then EXIT.

2) The Sound source may be set to PIP (picture in picture) instead of Main picture. In that case press MENU, select "Picture", select "PIP", select "Select Sound", then select "Main" (as opposed to "Sub"), as the source of the sound, and then press EXIT.
Whatever PIP is set to may not even be connected to the TV so there would be no sound.

The terms and menus used here are from Samsung so they will be different from yours but the concept is the same.

Good luck,
Techjoel

How do you turn the Ambilight on our philips tv?

Hi guys, I have the same model, and after reasing the manual a little closer and skimming the setup menu I've discovered that it's not actually a built in ambient light, it's actually a setting in the picture menu under "active control" that measures the ambient light in the room and adjusts the picture quality accordingly to ensure the best contrast and reduce glare/reflect imaging. Hope this helps....
