Modem Cannot Connect to Remote Computer

Hi, I have just bought a new HP computer with Vista (64 bit) and was amazed to discover no internal modem came with it. I have just purchased a Hiro external modem (2.0 USB connection). I have been trying to dial into my service provider (Sympatico) but keep getting an error message saying remote computer not responding. I have tried to speak to the techs at Sympatico who don't seem to know what the problem is. HELP!

Yes you're right! What you have to do is:

  1. Right click My Network Places
  2. Select Properties
  3. Select the Advanced menu
  4. Uncheck "Operated-Assisted Dialing"

HP with a westell 6100 modem can not connect to yahoo only google?

OK, modems normally only have one port to either plug in one computer or it plugs into a router that has 4 ports and wireless capabilities. So how are you and your wife connecting to a modem? Your problem might be that she is connected with an ethernet cable to the modem and you are not connected at all. The web pages you see could just be what is know as cache (sorta like a holding area for a page that was previously visited). So maybe at some point and time you had a valid connection and brought up the HP site and the Google site. But now when you try to go to some other site such as Yahoo you're not getting there because you're not connected.

Lost all connectivity. 3 computer setup has worked for over a year. 1-Vista Ultimate 64 Bit hard wired, 1 Vista HP 64 Bit wireless, 1 XP SP2 32 bit wireless. Shut down one night, next night could not...

so when you connect the speedstream mode to the computer , it works.
But when you connect the router , it doesn't work.
That means you will need to set up the router again.

See the manufactors web site below. Their are no VISA drivers available for your modem. I am sorry to say that your only opting may be a different (VISTA) compatable modem.

OK. First of all you do not need a special or seperate driver for the Ethernet port. Its factory loaded with your OS.

All you need to do is plug the Ethernet cable into the LAN port on your HP Desktop and then into the LAN port (not the WAN port) of your cable modem.

The second thing is if its only a cable modem, then I suggest you proceed with caution as there is NO built-in firewall on a cable modem. Yes you will get on the net, but you are likely to be attacked with virus the moment you connect. I suggest you check very carefully whether the cable modem (if that's what it is) does/does not have a firewall as you would be very unwise connecting up like that.

Next, forget USB connection to the router/cable modem. That technolgy we've moved on from.. Your Vista shodul be 'plug n play' adn should configure the router for you. obviously that bit isn't so slick on yours.

Let me know how you get on..
