Following a 4-day power failure, I emptied the refrigerator and freezer of its contents and washed the inside shelves and walls with a baking soda and mild soap solution. A hideous smell is emanating from it now that power has been restored, and I cannot locate the source. What could I have overlooked?

There is a pan under the refrigerator that condensation drips into. Pull that pan out and clean it out. You access the pan by removing the front lower grill but some you have to pull the fridge away from the wall to access it from the rear

SOURCE: Odor in GE side by side Fridge

Sounds like mold.  I'd try Lysol or one of the other products that claims to treat the odor cause in the air.  Spray a quantity into the empty fridge and freezer and turn it on.  Let the fans spread the stuff around. Try to find the internal vents which seem to pull air into the coils to spray into.

SOURCE: Bad Smell in Fridge

To remove odors:
1. Remove all items from refrigerator or freezer. Throw
out any spoiled foods. Take out removable parts and wash
them and door gasket with mild detergent in warm water.
Rinse well and wipe dry.

2. Wash interior walls and door liner with solution of 1-2
tablespoonsful of baking soda to 1 quart warm water, and
wipe dry. Leave door open and let it air out well, with a
fan directed toward inside, and opened windows if climate
permits.

3. If odor still remains, try one or all of the following
means of odor removal.

a. Spread baking soda out on shallow pans (like shallow
glass casseroles, pie plates, or jelly roll pans lined
with foil) and put pans on shelves to absorb odors, or on
the bottom and in baskets of chest freezer. Leave open
and unplugged.

b. Buy activated charcoal (which is specially treated to
remove odor molecules from air) at some department store
housewares sections, appliance store, or pet shop. Spread
out on shallow pans and put on shelves of refrigerator.
Turn refrigerator on low setting and run empty a few days
so odors will be absorbed.

c. Spread cat litter in shallow pan in cabinet, turn on
and run empty a few days. If odor is disappearing but is
not all gone, replace old litter with fresh litter.

d. Pour several ounces imitation vanilla (not pure
extract) in a shallow saucer, put on shelf and let run
empty a few days.

e. Put fresh ground coffee in cereal bowls inside the
refrigerator and let run empty several days. A slight
coffee odor may remain, but will disappear after washing
again with baking soda solution.

f. Pack each refrigerator shelf with crumpled newspaper.
Set a cup of water on the top shelf or sprinkle the
newspaper lightly with water. Allow refrigerator to run
for approximately 5-6 days. This method takes a bit longer
but has been effective in removal of strong odors.

g. Buy a commercial odor remover, and follow instructions
exactly. Several companies manufacture a liquid
concentrate which sells for about $3.00 for 1/4 to 1/2
ounce. A couple drops are put on a piece of cotton and
placed in the area to absorb odors, in the cabinet or
in a room.

Three of many brand names are: "Odor-Away" by Wrap-on
Co., available at hardware and hospital supply stores,
"SuperCD" IBL Household Products by Crackerbarrel Sales,
Avenal, New Jersey, available in pet supply department
or special products in grocery, or "Clean-Air" at some
appliance repair shops.

Hospital supply stores carry Dow Chemical Hospital
Disinfectant and Deodorant Spray. Spray into cabinet and
quickly shut the door. Repeat.

4. If none of these methods removes all the odor, then it
has probably penetrated into insulation. Contact an
appliance service company for an estimate on cost of
removing the liner and replacing the insulation. If cost
is too high you may prefer to get a new appliance. It
could be used for occasional cooling of soda pop where
the odor will not get into the beverage.

Replace the adaptive defrost control part number 240375803. About $100.00.

It is located in the fresh food section on the top left side behind the plastic panel.

How does one clean inside of freezer which had spoiled meat?

Hello Norm;

My name is peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

Plastic liners hold odor.

1.) Scrub down the liner with vinegar and water. Place baking soda on the shelves and close the door.

2.) There are special air fresheners for freezers to prevent odor. Sears carries them for about $12.00.

You need to remove everything from the machine - turn it off, clean all the trays, shelves, etc. Completely wipe down the inside of the machine with warm soapy water to remove residue, and then wipe down again with vinegar and water. Once this is done, open up a box of baking soda and put one in the freezer and one in the refrigerator section. Turn on the machine, It may take a few weeks to get the smell out - especially if the smell has gotten into the insulation around the box. Good Luck!

We have a Kenmore Elite refrigerator that smells like dead fish when the motor runs (we have never put fish in the refrigerator)- what is the problem and is it something that we can fix?

Sounds like water has gotten into the foam insulation or the unit was left closed for a period of time with no power (not running). You may want to try putting a box of baking soda inside the frig and freezer. Place the boxes to the back on one of the shelves as close to the fans as possible. If that doesn't work you may have to shut it down and leave the doors open for a week with baking soda still inside or 2 to 3 days with a fan forcing air into it constantly still with baking soda inside, of course the food inside would have to be removed.

Hi, pull out the fridge and remove the back panel, and clean that area. Make sure no food is stuck under the fridge also. A rotten piece of fruit or other food, once under there, will smell until it totally decomposes. You can also mix 1/3 cup of bleach and 2/3 cup of water , and pour down drain tube (rear bottom in freezer section. Too much bleach and the smell of bleach would be circulated by the fan to the room, so be sure to add water. Finally, another popular methods of removing fridge odor include washing the entire fridge out with a vinegar and water solution, placing fresh coffee grinds or boxes of baking soda on each shelf and even using trays of cat litter.

Keeping baking soda in the freezer has little chance of actually absorbing any odor causing air because the air is too dense. Two solutions I can recommend is to either turn the freezer to its HIGHEST setting so it doesn't freeze anything and try the baking soda again, or the second is very inconvenient, but I've seen it work, is to unplug the unit and place a container of Damp Rid in it for a couple of days.

Check the inside of the freezer and ensure there are no cracks in the lining as moisture can get in there and cause horrible smells, especially if you have ever put meat (especially poultry) and the package leaked before freezing.

I have a bad smell and taste in water and ice from fridge/freezer

Take out all shelves and accessories that can be removed. Wash these thoroughly with a mild detergent (dish washing liquid and warm water) and rinse thoroughly. Allow them to air dry completely.
* Wipe the inside walls of the refrigerator and freezer down completely with a solution of 1 quart warm water and 2 tablespoons of baking soda. Wipe the walls completely dry.
* Leave the doors standing wide open. Use a fan to circulate air through the cabinets for several hours to completely dry the inside walls. After several hours, turn the fan off.
* Replace the shelves in the refrigerator. Place shallow trays of one of the following deodorizers on the shelves of the refrigerator and freezer:
o Baking soda
o Activated carbon (used in aquarium filters, can be obtained at a pet store)
o Cat litter
o Fresh and unused coffee grounds (this may leave a coffee smell that would dissipate after several days)
* After 24 hours, plug in the refrigerator and allow it to cool for several hours with the deodorizer still in place. Once cooled to normal operating temperature, remove the trays of deodorizer and put your food back into the refrigerator and freezer.
* Keep some cereal size bowls of a deodorizer in the freezer and refrigerator cabinets for several days
