I recently had to have my camera sent to nikon to be repaired because my camera was not taking clear pics.... when i got my camera back the picture was much better but now all of a sudden when i turned my camera on its saying that my memory card is write protected! i did slide the tab down and checked and it didnt work.. i moved the tab back up and tried again and still no luck. every now and then my camera will let me take pics but when i turn it off it goes back to memory card write protected!

its driving me crazy!! i also tried 3 other memory cards that worked before i sent my camera away. could it be the camera its self and not the cards?

i've heard there are only a few brands that nikon cameras are guaranteed to work with, (supposedly stated on page 173 of the manual) other cards wont mess up your camera but they will be write protected. that is stupid.

What camera? What kind of card? SD cards have a sliding switch along one edge. Slide it away from the contacts.

How to unlock a photo in camara

The protect function allows a user to protect a picture from accidental deletion. To unprotect a picture on your camera, scroll to the protected picture that you want to delete, then press the Menu button (the button to the right of the Play button.) Scroll down the menu and you should come to an option that allows you to Protect/Unprotect the picture. Since your picture is currently protected, deselect that option. You should then be able to delete the picture normally.

Alternatively, you could also format the memory card, however this deletes ALL photos and data you have on the memory card. If you are trying to completely clear the memory, this is the best way. After turning on your camera, simply press the Menu button, scroll to Setup, then scroll down to Format. Select Format, it will ask you if you want to format the memory card, or the camera's built-in memory. Format whichever one you want to clear, if you are using a memory card then your pictures are stored on the memory card. It will take a few seconds to format.

Hope this helps.

Canon PowerShot SX20 IS Digital Camera keeps giving me a memory card error. The memory card is a 4gig PNY memory card (lower budget)

Make sure the slide switch on the side of the card is unlocked. Your camera may just want you to format the card in the camera. Download any pics from it first using a card reader if necessary.

Need to delete protected pictures

Try to remove first the memory card of your camera. After you remove the card you can see a small button at the side of the memory card. Just slide the small button to unprotected. Insert your memory card back to your camera and try to delete pictures.

Hi,
This used to happen when the write protect lock on in the memory card. Refer the manual to see how to remove the memory card.
After removing the memory card, unlock the write protect tab as shown in the fig. d7656e6.jpg

What does 'Write Protect' mean and how do I get rid of it?

That means that your SD card (or whichever memory card you use) is write protected and you cannot edit the card's content in any way.

Take your memory card out of the camera and plug it into your computer. There should be a place for you to change the memory card's protections that way. Sometimes, as with USB drives, there might be a small sliding lock physically located on the card which will also write protect the device.

Cannot delete photos" Card Protected" appears on screen

There should be a small switch on the memory card that allows users to lock it so no one can delete pictures on it. Take the memory card out of the camera and look for this switch on the card and make sure it is not in the locked position.

Memory card is write protected

Take your memory card out of the camera and switch the position of the little "lock" tab. That should fix it and you can start saving images.
