That light brown liquid is acid leaking from inside the batteries. The same thing can happen with a flashlight or any other battery-powered object. Now you know why instructions for most battery-powered items always say to remove the batteries if the item is not going to be used for an extended period.

Unfortunately, your camera has probably been ruined by the battery acid. At the least, all or most of the battery contacts have been corroded, but they may possibly be salvaged by a competent camera technician. This problem is obviously not covered by any Canon warranty, although some battery companies offer to repair items damaged by their batteries under certain circumstances.

I suggest that you contact your Canon Service Center and describe the problem, then ask them to quote a price range for the repair. Once you have their price, take it to one or two local camera techs who have good reputations to see if you can get it repaired more cheaply. If the battery company offers any warranty to cover damages from their batteries (check a new battery package), then be sure to get a written report on that from Canon or the local camera tech and submit a claim to the battery company.

I recommend getting a USB card reader for your memory card.

You should make sure that the camera is on for the transfer. If that doesn't work, try another USB input.

I have a Power Shot Canon A540. Even using alkaline batteries, the camera will not stay on. It states replace batteries. It is not on the recall list I checked. It's serial number is 2922243470. ...

I know you said you check, but you could be having the same problem.
ome Canon Powershot A530 and A540 cameras are subject to an advisory recall. It seems that a little hinge spring in the door of the battery compartment can stick out and short the batteries. The end result is very poor battery life, with only a few shots taken before the batteries die. Also the battery door becomes hot.
here is the canon notice

Canon Power shot A530 repeatedly displays "change

First make sure that you are using quality batteries, and not "super heavy duty". If so, some of The Canon Powershot A530 and A540 cameras are subject to an advisory recall. Seems that a small spring on the battery compartment door can short out the batteries. Suspect this of yours, in that you mention that your batteries aren't lasting long. If your camera is on the list, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please see this link for more info.

Hi there, I can help you with that. Do this:

Turn the camera off.
Take out the batteries for 5 minutes.
After 5 minutes, put the batteries back in (or get a fresh set).
Then turn the camera back on.

My Canon power shot S2 IS does not detect the batteries

There is a battery charge level sensor in the DC/DC internal converter board.

It seems that just started to fail such board.

You can try with other brand or type of AA batteries.

If still you have the same problem, you will need to have replaced the DC/DC converter board on your camera. This means a Camera repair shop service on it.

Best regards,

Has anyone tried a hard reset on their camera by removing the main power batteries for 60 seconds and the reinserting them as if it were the first time power up. This may not fix your particular problem, but when the processor that runs all of the electronic features of the camera gets confused, this is the best way to clear its confusion.
