I have seen hard drives where people had screwed around the partitions so bad that their computer would recognize it. I would recommend since Ubuntu can see it. Boot into a Ubuntu Live CD and delete any partition info so that it's a completely empty disc. Then try to use the Windows 7 DVD to install Windows. Comment back with your results.

How to reformat a computer

Insert the Microsoft Windows XP Professional CD-ROM into your computer.
Restart your computer, and choose "change boot order", and choose to boot from the CD-ROM.
Follow the on-screen prompts.

I have seen this b4 but only with a hard drive that was formatted with a third party partioning software like "patition majic" U can try using that software to add the new layering and retry your Win7 cd for another go.

How to reformat back to windows vista ?

You need a windows Vista disc. Insert the disc and follow the prompts. I would format the hard drive instead of upgrading do a new install. The best way would be to go into your bios and make sure the boot device order has the cd-rom booting before the hard drive. Then put the disc in and start the computer, when it says press any key to boot from cd hit any key and let it load and then follow the prompts to install.

I have no video output after reformating my hard drive. but the computer goes through its boot sequence.

Reformatting your hard drive means erasing your operating system.(OS). Therefore, you have to reinstall
your operating system (Windows XP, Windows 7)
After you reinstall your OS, you must also reinstall the
software driver for sounds, and video. All software drivers
must be compatible with your OS.

I cant reformat my hard drive. (Windows XP)

Hi. There are several causes for this type of error. Either your Windows CD is corrupted, hardware is faulty (Motherboard, RAM, hard disk, video card, etc.). You may want to try to reformat your hard drive using another computer first just to isolate if your hard drive is faulty. If you can format it using another computer, try installing windows on that computer.

Reformatting problem

Do you mean that you are re-loading windows? if you are when it reboots after re-loading and it says boot/start with cd-rom support do not press enter again or anything else for that matter because if you do it will keep taking you through the whole process again. Once it has loaded and reboots do not press anything it will start windows( even though it gives you the option to start with cd-rom support - just ignore it), itself and take you to the welcome screen etc... once this happens you can take the disk out.

DELL reformating

On boot press the key that will open your BIOS (usually flashes which key this option for a second or two on boot, or just press F1, F2, and the delete key on boot) and set the boot order to CD ROM drive first, then with the Windows CD/DVD in your CD's tray reboot and look for a prompt to press any key to boot to the CD and press a key. This prompt will only show for a few seconds, so you have to be quick. Once booting to the CD you should get to the format and partition screen where you can delete partitions, create new ones, and then format the one you want to reinstall your OS on and the rest should be easy.

Reformatted hard drive won't boot

The grub loader is for linux, what it is telling you is that the file the boot loader is looking for was not found (that would be the case because you just reformated it). grub will also complain and fail to boot if the boot file is located past track 1024 (wich would be the case if you installed a significantly larger hard disk). I think what you need to do is delete all the partitions using windows (or dos)
re partition the drive (that will usualy reload the standard boot loader) and see what happens. if you need to install linux then install it on the first partition.

Hi my machine? wont reformat

Your problem is being cause by one of two situations: 1. you have a faulty hard-drive 2. Your system is over heating. Because it seems to work after a period of not being in use it sounds like overheating. There is a common fault on Toshinba laptops with overheating. If you google for "overheating toshiba" you will find loads of links to "How to clean your laptop" and you will also see many people with the same problem as you.
