I had the same problem. Almost exactly a year to the date that I purchased this device, it started freezing and locking up to the point that it didn't work at all, no matter how many times I replaced the battery. Just now I went to the RCA website and downloaded the latest firmware (v 4.07), following the instructions carefully to upgrade the player. As a measure of caution, I checked the box to format the whole device too. Now it seems to be working again, but not sure for how long. http://www.rcaaudiovideo.com/en-US/RD2212_15_17Firmware

I have the same mp3 player and mine does that too. if you take the battery out for a couple seconds and put it back it in should work fine. if not i hope its still under warranty
