Unit powers on but DVD player will not play disk

My son put a piece of plastic in the DVD slot. It got lodged in so tight that I had to take the unit apart to remove the plastic piece. I even had to remove the DVD player from its bracket which included unfastening the widest tape/wire. When I got the unit put back together, the DVD player would not spin, no laser action; just acts like it's not getting any power. The power and eject buttons are lit and the screen comes on, but the words on the screen are all blurry and unreadable.
