Simpletech 320gig hard drive crashed?

Been working fine for months. Today the desktop shortcut was a red "?" and now my computer will not even see it. It turns on (red light is on) and blue lights on top just flash for a moment where they used to flash in a circle.

There was a thunder/lightning storm the day before it stopped working. Could a surge have damaged it? I have TONS of photos on this baby and am scared I will not be able to get them back.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think this is a lightning issue as this just happened to me as well and there was no lightning or power surge in my area

I like ones like you who already understand that a lightening power surge can really kill the computers will to live lol

1. always put the computer on a surge protection strip or even better a UPS backup device to protect it from surges , and in the case of brownout the UPS backup would take care of that circumstance
or at least some kind of VR , voltage regulator ... not that computer powersupplies do not protect the PC , the PC powersupplies of today to have some built in protections , but ooops there went your power supply anyway if you know what I mean.

2. if you suspect the power supply is the culprit , you can test by using another power supply
which is a good investment because if it was the power supply you just got yourself a nice new one
and even if it's not the power supply , you still have a nice new one in your hand

a power supply in the hand is worth two in the bush :-> lol

and if it's the motherboards fault , at least you'll already have your nice new power supply for that new motherboard you get.

a good strong power supply is a good investment no matter how you slice it.

I always keep any spare power supplies I get , because you can use them while your dead power supply is being RMA-ed or sent back. ,, that time gap is not fun lol

Take out the hard disk from your case and put it inside a desktop- if there's still some life left in it it will appear in My Computer. If it doesn't appears even there then it's dead for sure and all the data on it is lost.

Six month old Simpletech 500 GB ext. drive not recognized

I had the exact same problem. Solved by removing Simpletech drive from the 'flashy-box'. Unplugged drive from internals and threw the 'Pinnaferrina' case away and installed it on my motherboards extra sata plugin site (if it has one). If you open your computer case it should be labled on the Motherboeard as such. Mine has four. On the first attempt when I started the computer i Had no OS system showing on first boot-up. Shut off computer and power and shifted SATA (RED Cable) to another Sata plug on Motherboard and it booted right up and I had the drive back. You will need a longer Sata cable than the attached to the Simpletech drive and a power cable that matches the one on the Simletech . Forget looking for the drivers on the net and the Simpletech web site was no use.

500Gb SimpleTech Ext Drive No Power

Hello.
It sounds like you might have a problem with the power supply.
I have seen MANY external hard drives with failing power supplies. Take it to the store you purchased it from for a check up, it should still be under warrantee if its only 3 months old.
Good Luck!

Simpletech 500 GB external hard drive - unresponsive

If you really can not get it to work anymore, you could try opening it up and connecting the hdd directly on a IDE/SATA port in your computer. This will only work if you have a desktop, for a laptop you would need all kinds of converters.

Try using the included USB power cable to make sure the hard drive is getting enough juice. If that doesn't work, then try getting a power adapter to plug into the back of it, just make sure it is the right voltage for the hard drive. You can usually find the voltage written on the back of the hard drive where the plug-in is for the adapter or in the user manual, and you can find adapters in electronics stores such as RadioShack or CircutCity.

Simpletech pininfarina problem

It appears that this is happening a lot with external drives. Inside most of them is just a regular internal drive. In my case I simply removed the drive from the external enclosure (a SimpleTech 160 Gig) and installed it in my PC, where it works like a charm. Most people who have this problem go out and buy a replacement generic external drive enclosure for about $30.00.
