If you get weird colors and poor resolution, then it is probably just the driver, that need reinstalling, in this case you will be able to read text normally, only photos look bad.
If you do not have the disk you can reinstall driver from factory website.

If you instead get only a bunch of floating stripes on the screen , then there is an hardware fault.
Either the connector/flat cable to LCD, or the video adapter.

Connect an external screen to laptop.

If external monitor works, then it is probably the video ribbon cable, the connector, or the LCD. Still not too expensive to fix.

If the external screen does not work, then it is the video adapter that is integrated on motherboard.
In this case check your guaranty terms.

If you need service you can call the number listed on the owner manual.

You could try re-installing the graphics drivers, but it may be more serious, you may need to take to a local tech for testing as it could be 1 of 3 possible faults, graphics chipset, LCD/LED display or the LCD/LED display cable, let me know what happens. good luck.

I have a Compaq v 5000 and the screen colors are the opossite of what they should be, is it the LCD, graphics card ( dont even know if there is one, not computer literate), or is it the mother board? It is...

OK... there's a few things that can cause this....

First... You need to look at your display settings... Open the control panel and click on Display Icon. (might need to set to classic view to view your control panel icons)....
Once there... Click on the Settings Tab, and make sure your color is set to 32bit and screen size is at least 1024x768..

If All Is Set Correctly There...

If Able To.... Connect A Desktop Monitor To The Laptops VGA OutPut Serial Port....Power Laptop On And See If Same Symptoms Occur On The External Screen....

If The Same Thing Is Happening On External Screen, THen You're Having Video Issues/ which means your video chip is failing/overheating..which would mean either a motherboard replacement or a graphics/gpu chip reflow....

Also... A Failing LCD Bulb Can Cause Similar Symptoms...
Though when a LCD Bulb Starts to Fail It Will Usually Omit Pastel Colors To The Whole Screen...Pinks, Oranges.. etc....

Display is all garbled on bootup, cannot read image.

Test if it's your graphics chip by connecting a desktop monitor to the laptops serial port, reboot the laptop, and look to see if same thing happens on the external monitor.. If it does, then you have a failing gpu/graphics chip.

In case it is a brand new laptop, do not try to repair it yourself as it will void the warranty. Check with the Toshiba Service Center and they might change the screen free of cost or with a nominal charge in case it is in warranty.

Can you hear sound playing as if it were loading the Windows desktop? If so, there are are a few things to check for:

  1. Look VERY closely at the screen once the laptop is on. Can you make out very faint images? They will be hard to see and it's best to be in a well lit area at the time. If you do see images, then the backlight on your LCD screen has gone out. You will need a new LCD most likely.
  2. If you don't see any image at all, try plugging an external monitor into the laptop and booting up the laptop. If you see an image on the external monitor but not the LCD, then you may have a bad inverter/cable/LCD.
If you cannot get an image on the external monitor either, then your video card may be bad. Considering that a lot of laptop video cards are built-in to the motherboard, you may be looking at having to replace the motherboard of the laptop (about 2/3rds the cost of the laptop).

There may be other problems at hand, but those are the most common I've found in this type of situation.

My laptop screen had an odd color to it a few days & is black now

You could have a defective screen - a defective inverter or a CCFL lamp or simply the video cable needs reseating. After reseating the video cable and the problem is still there then :- To determine if you have a LCD screen or video card problem, read this and follow the instructions. Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashs on red/pink and off. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickering on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case. The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills. Check out www.lcdparts.net for parts, repair service and DIY info.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 and its a little over a year old. It started acting funny about a month ago. It will work fine for about 5 minutes then it goes to a screen with different colored bars and i...

Hey there,
Colored bars make me think of hardware failure of the 1)screen or the 2)graphics card. Both of these, on a laptop, are going to mean sending it in for repair, out of warranty, and paying their rate, which maybe 150 bucks or more. Now, it might be software, considering it works for a bit, then gives you bars. You would hope it's that,. because you can try to solve it by downloading your most recent video card driver.

Ive had an inspiron and like 4 other laptops. A few times I tried updating my video driver to what ended up to be the wrong one, and it gave me lines and bars on the screen. I had to restart in safe mode and roll back to the old drivers, voila, fixed.

Try to go to dell and download the video card or graphics card drivers for your operating system. Install them, reboot. Does it help?

Try to restart in safe mode by pressing F8 when booting up (you have to press it repeatedly as you boot up). Select safe mode, you'll see some stuff on the screen, dont get scared, you'll load windows without all teh extra baggage. You'll see a kindergarten looking screen with big icons and letters. Dont be scared, it's just a basic video driver that lets you see the screen, but not to its full potential. What you're trying to isolate by using teh computer in this state for 15-20 minutes is "will the problem happen with hardly any software loaded". If it does, it's likely hardware-related, needing repair.

If you need to send it in, you'll pay. they wont overcharge you hopefully, but a new laptop computer costs 400-600 bucks minimum, which is a lot less than it used to be, but more than the cost to swap out a graphics card. A new LCD screen may cost you 175 with labor, but that's a guess since I dont have my 2 dell laptops any more...

Try the things I mentioned, and good luck!

Acer Travelmate LCD screen went dark

The same thing happened on my HP. I ended up buying a LCD screen off ebay. That corrected the problem. New screens cost $150+. You can get one off ebay for half the price.
