Hello, I would like some information on how the fat burn/fitness part works. On the screen it shows my current heart rate, then below is a line with a number and a little heart which is showing my current heart rate. When my heart rate is below the line it says fat burn and when it is above it shows fitness. My question is, what does the number mean on the line as it can change from day to day. If you could explanin what this means, I would be most grateful. I hope I have explained this well enough. Cheers, Anna

    Hi Joe,

Thanks for that information. The part I need info on is the number that divides the fat burn and the fitness. You said this can change with age?? Mine changes everyday. Yesterday it was 120 and today it's 111. I understand that when my heart rate goes over this number, it goes from fat burn to fitness, but I don't understand what this number means. Is it the lower it goes the fitter i'm getting?

    Thanks Joe!

    Hi Joe,

That makes sense to me now. I think it calculates it each time I put it on.

Just to be certain, it's a Polar CR 1632.

    Cheers,

    Anna

The heart rate monitor will tell you your CURRENT HEART RATE by continuously measuring your pulse and calculating your heart rate as it changes from second to second.

Your MAXIMUM HEART RATE is basically the fastest your heart will beat without you being in immediate danger of acute medical distress. This number is slightly different for each person and even changes from year to year generally getting lower as you get older. This MAXIMUM HR is obviously not something that every person will want to experience during their regular workout, so most people will train at an intensity level which is only a fraction of that MAXIMUM heart rate.

Your TARGET HEART RATE is where you would like your heart rate to remain during the course of each of your particular workout routines. Your TARGET HR will be different depending on what you are trying to accomplish with each workout routine.

Here is a link to a website which describes what your TARGET HEART RATE should be in terms of percentage of MAXIMUM HEART RATE, depending on what kind of results you are trying to achieve (Fitness or Strength):

http://www.thewalkingsite.com/thr.html

Just use your mouse to click on the link, which is the underlined and highlighted text just above. This will open a new web browser page automatically for you and allow you to view the information at the website indicated.

Please comment back here to this page if you have any details to add, have any questions, have difficulty accessing the link, or just require further general assistance and I will respond as soon as I see it.

I hope that was helpful to you, good luck and take care.

Joe.

Your particular heart rate monitor probably just estimates your MAXIMUM and your TARGET heart rates based upon what it measures as your RESTING heart rate. Your resting heart rate can obviously vary a bit from day to day depending on your activity level or mood, and there can certainly be some innaccuracies in the actual HR measurement itself.

I'm not sure of exactly which brand / model of heart rate monitor you have, so I can't say with any certainty exactly how often it measures and calculates those values or how accurate it is. Some models will actually allow you to calculate and input your own MAXIMUM HR value which then stays constant until you alter it again yourself. Others will ask you to input some variables like your age and then measure others like your resting heart rate which it figures is just the lowest heart rate it sees during a certain period of time.

If you provide the exact make and model number of your device then I may be able to find out more information about that specific model and how it measures / calculates the various values displayed.

    Thanks.

Here is a link to a short Youtube video which demonstrates how to initially set up and use a TIMEX brand heart rate monitor watch:

Just click on the above link and a new browser window will open automatically and allow you to watch the video.

Sorry about that, I stuck up that Timex HRM video link before your model number comment posted.

Speaking of which, could you please double check that model number on your device.

CR-1632 sounds a lot more like the type of replacement battery it would take than the actual model number of the unit itself.

What are some mind-blowing facts about exercise, fitness and working out?

Here are a couple of thing that perhaps you didn't already know and that will change your perception about working out.

Advantages of Weight Benches and How You Benefit from Them

  1. Doing targeted exercises like sit-ups and crunches will not get you a six-pack. They will strengthen your abs, but a six-pack is more about % body fat than about strength.
  2. As you improve your cardiovascular health, your resting heart rate becomes lower and lower. It's pretty easy to get your resting heart rate under 60 beats per minute. Lance Armstrong's heart beat at 32-34 bpm.
  3. If you work out at a high intensity for 45 minutes, your body's metabolism stays elevated for up to 14 hours. In addition to burning calories during the workout, your body will burn an extra 150-200 calories in the hours after a workout.
  4. It's a general belief that cardiovascular exercises boost fat loss better than weight lifting exercises. In reality it's opposite - lifting weights not just build muscles but plays a bigger and faster role in fat loss as well.
  5. Skipping meals = starving your body. Contrary to popular belief, this INCREASES your fat storage.
  6. To get the most out of your fitness you need to make sure you rest! You can't build muscles on activity alone. Your body needs the rest time to actually do the muscle building. Exercise is only the work order - not the construction process.
  7. Exercising actually helps your brain grow new brain cells.
  8. The results of a new study from the University of Alabama in Birmingham, that looked at the effects of exercise for women over the age of 60, suggests that women in this age range may only need to exercise once a week to gain significant benefits in their strength and endurance.
  9. Exercise releases endorphins, which create feelings of happiness and euphoria. Studies have shown that exercise can even alleviate symptoms among the clinically depressed. In some cases, exercise can be just as effective as antidepressant pills in treating depression.
  10. And then, there's this.

I'm 65kgs weight, height 5'3'' inchs, age 25.i want to reduce weight upto 10kgs using treadmill at home....can u tell me dait and work out for best results......

If your unit has a interval training mode I suggest you us it. Frequency of training should be no more than 20 to 30 min 3 times a week because you want to loose approx 1 pound ( .5 kilos ) a week, the first 10 days you will loose 2.5 to 5 kilos just because of water weight then you will grind out the 5 to 7.5 kilos. Before doing any thing drink 2 glasses of water this will increase your metabolic rate then do your training first thing in the morning. By using this formula Heart rate minus age times .65 this sould be where target heart should stay low intensity work out will burn body fat and not burn you out. Go to this website www.webmd.com and more information to keep you on path of healthy living. Good Luck!!
