I have changed air filter. I have check everything that the manual says to do. I made up fresh oil and gas mix. My mantis died. it will not crank up.
On page 17 under "MAINTENANCE" I have done all these things, with the acception of not changing the fuel filter. I don't have one. I have used my tiller for 2 seasons. Could this be the problem? How can I check this out and/or get a new filter?

Having owned a Mantis for many years it sounds like your air/fuel mixture may be to lean when you push the choke in. First check the simple stuff. Make sure you are using fresh fuel with the proper 2-cycle oil mixture. Check or replace the fuel and air filters. Replace the spark plug annually. These are the routine maintenance procedures found in your owner's manual. If none of this solves your problem either the carb fuel mix adjustment screws are not set properly or a carb rebuild kit is needed. The proper setting for the mixture screws should be detailed in your manual. Removing the carb and replacing the needle valves, gasket and other items takes a little more expertise. Before jumping in to this and assuming all other maintenance has been performed press the fuel primer bulb several times before trying to start it. You should feel resistance after 3-4 pushes. If you don't feel any resistnace the carb is not being primed and the bulb needs replacement (you may notice a small fuel leak if this is the case). If you can get it primed, pull the choke out, start and let it run a minute or so. Then make small, gradual changes by turning the fuel mix screws (not the idle adjustment) as noted in your manual. Try to push the choke in half way or as far as you can without killing the engine. If may run a little rough but continue tweaking the screws until it smooths out a little. Gradually continue pushing the choke in and turning the adjustment screws as needed to keep it from stalling. This is best done with the tines supported off the ground during adjustments. Just make sure to protect yourself and others from coming in to contact with them. When set correctly you should be able to achieve full throttle with the choke fully closed. I have the same problem. Can't find my manual to look up trouble-shooting guide. Did following, but same symtom after:
1.) Clean air and fuel filter
2.) Replace gas lines with "tygon" tubing; check for kinks in gas lines.
1.) Runs good for about 20 seconds then dies slow death. Starts and idles good.
2.) Air bubbles in primer squeeze bulb.
3.) Gas tank is pressurized.
My next trial and error mission:
1.) Fresh gas and oil mix.
2.) Remove gas and oil filters for bench test
3.) Replace primer tube (it is smaller than gas tube) so I cut ends and re-used old.
If you have pin-pointed the problem let me know. It sure seems like gas starvation.
The engine is running lean--check the fuel filter, air cleaner, and muffler for plugging. Check the fuel lines for decay or other damage. Make sure that the fuel mix is fresh and the container is shaken thoroughly just before adding fresh fuel to the tank to prevent oil starvation. Hope this helps!
Hello. Begin by changing your air filter. If the air filter is dirty or has too much oil in it the trimmer will not start. Next, change the spark plug. Then check the fuel filter inside of the tank to be sure it is not clogged.
Finally, I do have a customer now and then who accidentally puts in the wrong fuel [for instance straight gas instead of the gas and oil mix required]. If this is a possibility, drain the tank and start over with a fresh gallon of gas and a fresh 2 cycle oil mix. Joe
First check that your Mantis needs an oil/gas mixture, most of the newer Mantis tillers have four-stroke motors meaning they have oil in the crankcase and use straight gas. If your Mantis needs oil mixed in the gas use a 50:1 ratio. That's usually 2.6 ounces of two-cycle oil (it's sold in bottles that size) to one gallon of gas but read the oil bottle to get the proper mix ratio.
you probably have gum or varnish built up inside the carb. take it apart and clean all the ports and jets with fresh gas. drain the float bowl and fill it with fresh gas as well. if you are not familiar with carbs, best not take it apart yourself, or pay VERY close attention to how it came apart.
Hi Don. There are two adjustment screws on the carburetor. Start the engine and while it is idling, turn the screw closest the engine (low speed adjustment) counterclockwise until it starts to falter, then back a 'hair' and try the throttle again. If that doesn't work, I would recommend doing what I usually do... put a new carb on and be done with it! Carb is a Zama C1U-K54A
jj505 has good and bad information. Honda GX25 is a 4 stroke motor, with oil lubricated crankcase. Oil drains out the filler. Oil and gas do not mix on this four stroke. The PDF below is the Honda manual. http://www.smallenginewarehouse.com/images/manuals/GX25-35.pdf
Your quickest fix for this problem is to simply replace the carburetor, a Zama K54A. Do it all the time. After that, if you can find a 2 cycle oil, Opti-2, it's the best you can use and it's a one mix for all your 2 cycle equipment (blowers, trimmers, chainsaws, etc.) It's the only 2 cycle I sell in my shop.
