The problem you discribe is a very very common problem and should able to be fixed for a reasonable price bey a good local guy if he knows how to adjust the tape path in a vcr as the tension posts on the right and the left side of the deck comes loose and knocks the tape path alighnment out . Now you say its dead now Oh boy that could be the dreaded sony PAN cap syndrom!!! Its the small panasonic surface mounted capd that all become leaky after a while and needs to replace many at a time or even in extreme cases the entire or mutible complete PCB assys have to be relaced.. Sorry to be the one to tell ya this man. But maybe you will be a luck one and only need a tape path alighnment!! Good Luck To Ya
