Traveler stick 4 gb plug it in and it said i need drivers

This would only normally be the case in windows 98 or earlier computers.

Normally windows XP and above would find this and install without any issue.

If you have XP or greater then you ihave other problems
Window 98 may not fully support your flash drive or at least may work very slowly.

One or more of the hints below will probably sort out most USB problems with most USB portable / external hard drives and OTHER devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems (mac/ Linux) similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especially true if you move a HUB to another port
6. For FLASH DRIVES you should ensure that the device is set for "quick removal" using the drive control panel properties or use the USB "Safely Remove Hardware" option. If you dont do this there is a very strong chance that any files you transfer may not be there when you plug into another computer.

If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further

USB flash drives can fail for no apparent reason.
Sandisk Cruzers are especially bad for this.

USB hard drives should be treated with extreme care.
This is a real hard drive ! and knocks and bumps can quite literally kill them.

It is possible to remove drives from the enclosures in most cases and connect directly inside a PC to fully check it.
You should also do this to cheack the drives connections are not bad inside the enclosure

Note that if you hear a drive clicking or pinging this could be the worst thing you would hear.
Known as "The Click Of Death"

If none of the above steps help look at updating the drivers from the manufacturers web site in the support section.

I just installed usb 2 pci card in an old win98 pc after installing drivers from the cd.Device manager says it's working but when I plug anything into the usp port a window pops up telling me I need to...

That is a common thing with the early win 98 os and newer hardware.

You really should consider an upgrade to at least 98SE or even WINDOWS ME.

The machine will struggle with USB 2.0 and you are open to a whole lot of little glitches

I just bought a Loigitech Premium 4-port hub but it does not work on my computer. I have a Dell Inspiron 510m laptop of about 2002/03 vintage. when I first plugged it in I got the message (something...

First go ahead and plug the hub back in and see if the ports are working. If they are not. I would try to go into control panel and then goto system and then hardware and then Device Manager. Scoll down to the USB Connection Field. See if they are any explanation points in yellow over any of the devices in the usb connection fields. If there are, Then its a driver issue. I would right click on them and click uninstall... Once doing so you can right click on any field and then click on scan for hardware changes. This will make the computer re scan for the USB Device Hub that you just purchased.

Note: Currently there doesnt seem to be any drivers availible for this device for Windows Vista.

Hope this helps

I have Windows 98 and I need to download drivers for my USB DRIVE HOW AND WHERE CAN i DOWNLOAD

First you need win98SE (the Second Edition), still not sure that it will work I guess you try to conect a USB 2.0 device, I think that it will be better if you buy a 4 port USB 2.0 PCI card, install in an empty mainboard slot then install the USB drivers that come with the card and connect the device, be sure to ask the dealer for compatibility before you buy.

USB Ports

one way would be to download and install latest device drivers from the net. it should help.. if you are using win XP, there is likely a BIOS or Windows configuration problem. On some computers there is a configuration option in the BIOS that asks whether an IRQ should be assigned to USB. Although the option's actual wording varies among BIOS manufacturers, you must enable this option by setting it to either On or Yes (depending on your BIOS manufacturer and BIOS version). Otherwise no USB devices will work on XP. A problem with Windows XP’s USB Controller configuration can also prevent any USB devices from working. To determine whether the USB controllers are working properly, open Device Manager and expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers node. Beneath this node, you should see a USB Universal Host Controller and a USB Root Hub. Depending on your PC, there will either be a USB Universal Host Controller and a USB Root Hub listed for each of your computer’s USB ports or a USB Universal Host Controller and USB Root Hub for multiple ports

Can't upgrade the USB ports to Version 2.0

Hi cogilbert,
I had a similar problem with my PC which had older version 1 USB. I purchased a USB 2 PCI card with USB Hub, installed and problem solved. It really not a very expensive proposition. The card comes with the necessary software and drivers. It works great.
