Question about PC Desktops

1 Answer

Bought a iomega 500gb external hard drive from Staples today. Connected as per manual. Computer will not recognise it. (I have an iBook G4 and wish to upgrade the memory from 256mb to 1gb and need the external drive to preserve data)

yes - and the box clearly displays the mac icon

  • Leig Sep 10, 2008

the drive powers up and is connected at the usb port. Up comes the message "the disc you inserted was not readable by this computer" and offers the choice of ignore, eject or initialise. The latter is clearly relevant but when chosen indicates a choice of the installed hard disc, something designated 27.9GB fujitsu MHT20 and 465.8GB St3500882OA.... Selecting this latter brings up the repair disc utility with its further options faded out and non-operative ( e.g. verify disc). There is a indication that the disc is not partitioned and "New Image" seems operative but 5've no idea what that does.

ps there was no installation CD. The manual makes no reference to it and merely tells me that whe connected as instructed the icon will appear on my mac desktop.

    Hi all!
Well I tried the format as new image. I went to bed and ten hours later it was still reading the disc. When that ended there was a further step in order to place the image which took another six hours, after which an icon of sorts appeared on the desktop. I clicked on this only to have the familiar box informing me that the inserted disc had not been recognised and inviting initialisation. Following this restored the old disc utility where all this started.
At this point I though I ought to see if the new drive was operatin, so I borrowed a windows operating machine, which simply recognised the disk and mounted it in about 5 seconds. And yet the supplier and box were adamant that the devise was ambidextrous. Putting two and two together it was clear that the devise is sold with the windows application privileged, since most machines will use that system. So it was a question of working out how to alter the order of privileging. Fiddling about in the disc utility revealed that this is done by selecting "erase" (counter intuitive this!) One finds the system one wants, names it and within a split second the icon appeared and the devise was mounted.
This is all the fault of the manual, which suggests that merely switching on the connected devise mounts it whatever the operating system. This is simply not so.
I'm sorry to have troubled you all. I was wonderfully impressed by the speed with which the problem was picked up and discussed.

Ok fair enough.... recheck that you have power going to the external drive and that the usb connector is hooked up properly....i'm not sure if that has firewire on it but ensure you are not connecting firewire to usb or vice versa

The more i read that the more i'm thinking the drive just needs to be formatted for the mac operating system.... unless the box states that there is software for backing up your system go ahead and format it as a new image.

I recently restored to factory settings on my HP laptop.once restored I then input my Iomega drive into the USB port to access some of my saved files.

Just to be on the safe side, why not plug in your iomega drive into another known working computer and see what happens. If it works fine and is properly recognized then the anomaly lies within the software of your laptop.

U might want to contact HP - but be fore warned that they are terrible for support if your unit is "out of warranty." If that is the case I would simply google the anomaly and in all likelihood you will get links that will help you fix it yourself.

My iomega 250gb external hard drive will not open because of an inpage operation can anyone help???...

I am sure that you have unplugged the external drive and tried it again. Have you tried it on a different system? You can install the drivers to another computer and see if that will resolve the issue. If it does, you will need to uninstall the current drivers on your PC and then reinstall them. Does this Iomega have a bus connection. Not all bus connections load the driver automatically. You may have to go to Iomega website and get the driver. Then you just have to get rid of the one that you have (may be corrupted) and install this one.

Hope this helps you solve your issue.

I just bought an iOmega eGo 160GB external hard drive and have no idea how to use it once I've installed the program. Help!!

From what I'm finding; this drive is a USB 2.0 drive. First, you'll need to plug the drive into the computer via the supplied USB cable (if it came with one) and any AC power for the drive if it requires it.

Then, your PC should detect it and you then need to run the software for it to be configured properly.

To use the drive, simply (if in windows) double click my computer and the drive will probably come up with a name such as eGo or iOmega Hard Disk or possibly even External Hard Disk. From there, double click that drive and start copy files! :)

Yes you should try to run the installation disks for the iomega again, You might need to run regedit to remove the software or go into the add remove programs and remove all traces then reinstall software.
