Make sure the hold/lock switch is not engaged.
Try another USB port.

If that fails:
Triple Reset for Philips’ GoGear:

Disconnect the Go Gear from computer. Press the reset pinhole until the player turns off. Hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard. If this pop-up does not appear, reset the player again WHILE connected to the computer. Open the Philips Device Manager, and go to Repair Tab. Reset the player one more time while connected to computer. Follow the repair instructions.

After repair is complete, upgrade the firmware for this player. Will erase all the songs, but you should be good to go again.

My philips 2gb wont turn on

All of your issues may be hardware-related - call Philips to see if you are still under warranty. To narrow it down, try this:

I cant start my mp3 player

2 diff. problems, actually, disguised as 1:
hotroger - Your description has some holes in it - When you add large files, or a large number of files, to an mp3 player, it will stay stuck on updating for upwards of 30 minutes. The solution to that problem is to only give it a few songs or 1 movie at a time. So, for your player to say updating and not show the main menu sounds normal so far. What happened between the time when it was disconnected from the computer and when you replugged it into the computer? If you didn't let it finish updating, or turned the player off while it was updating, you frazzled that poor player's brain. Connect the player in the OFF position to the computer while holding in the volume + button (it is the arrow button in some of the newer GoGear's). Continue holding volume + (or arrow) for 5-15 seconds until a Window pops up on your computer saying Found New Hardware Wizard - it will half-cocked lead you to Repair your device using the Philips Device Manager. Once the Repair is complete, all your songs/videos will be erased but your player should work again.

ranke - You were trying to add files that were not in the proper format. Load only songs in mp3 format, and you will never have this problem again. Many of the newer Philips players are not DRM-compatible, and the songs you were trying to load probably had DRM protection.
