Frigidaire FRT18DRH smells like gas leak

For the past two days when we open the door, it smells like a gas leak. Also, ice is forming in the refrigerator no matter what temp it's at.

I was going to hire a repair guy, but they're all busy for the next two weeks. I was really worried about it because we have a two year old in the house and I didn't know if it would make him sick. We decided to run down to Sears and buy a new fridge rather than wait. This one is 18 years old anyway. I appreciate your quick response. Now I'm curious - what makes the ice smell like gas? Does it mean the freon is leaking? Yes, it is on the plate at the back.

Hey there....

The most common answer for your problem would be your door rubber not sealing.
The ice it builds up has that weard gas smell and the reson for ice building up is dampness in the atmosphere.
Remember that a fridge DONT make any thing cold,it only extracts heat.Witch means the air ceep coming in and the dampness freeze up,thats the ice forming, and am i right if i say it forms on the evaporator?"the plate at the back inside your fridge"

If so let me know and ill help you to fix it.

Hey, sorry it took so long for me to get back to you, I had 2 format my pc...

Any ways,no its not the freon leaking, its the air, most of the air in a kitchen is from cooking, and all that smells combined is frozen in your fridge,And yes,its only the door rubber and your fridge is fixed.

Thanks for the Fix Ya by the way.

    Enjoy your day.

Frigidaire galaxy. French doors with freezer on the bottom. Ice builds up in left corner vent to freezer. Today the ice in the ice maker was melting and water running out the dispenser.

The problem is either door alignment of the gasket around the door. In some cases, people overfill the boxes and food products push forward causing the door to remain slightly opened. If the gaskets are not sealed 100% this allows air to seep into the fridge or freezer and cause moisture buildup and leaking. It also runs up the electric bill.

Continuous knocking noise from ice maker. Ice maker has been off for past 3 months. Only thing that will make it stop is turning it off or unplugging it.

Hi Marcel,
Thank you for contacting fixya.

Our ice maker recently had its water inlet freeze up, preventing water from filling the trays. The mechanism kept dutifully trying to push nonexistent ice cubes into a bin that never filled up, which might account for the knocking noise in your case.
To defrost it we just unplugged the unit, took all the food out of the freezer section, and left the door open for a couple of hours. It wasn't long enough for any of the frozen food to defrost, and since we were careful to minimize opening the refrigerator section's door, the food in that part stayed cold enough to be safe as well.

Freezer is running constantly. ice crystals formed on outside of packaged foods. food is still frozen.

the door was left open,if you find frozen water droplets on the food packages or ice crystals it forms from the warm air coming in,make sure all the packages are pushed in and not hitting the door and you can tilt the fridge back a little so the door will close with a slight push.also check the ice shout door and make sure no air is leaking through it,you'll know you'll see all ice around can check the condenser coil and condenser fan to see if it needs to be vacuumed, the machine will run longer if the coil is clogged with dust or if the fan isn't blowing, the coil should be cleaned every 6 to 12 months.hope this helps but it sounds like the freezer door was left open.

Hello tds. It is not uncommon to smell gas when you open an oven door. That said, if the amount of gas you smell is stronger than it used to be call your gas company. They will send out a technician, free of charge, to check your stove. Joe

I had the same problem. After 6 months I contacted Frigidaire about it. They made arrangements with a local factory service repairman. Be sure you have your model and S/N available. The repairman came to my home, verified the problem and returned a week later and installed the replacement door dispenser. Problem solved.
