Broken Speakers

My speakers are broken and won't work. I have new ones but they dont work either.I have a windows xp HP editon computer. I also have a microphone thing and when i blow into it and hold the speaker next to my ear I can hear myself. I hope you can help me and if you need to know anything else just ask. THANKS

Gurusilly question is the volumw turned up in the main volume control?? go to start, all programs then to accessories then to entertainment let me know if that works.
