You need a Firewire/ SCSI adapter. Mine is a Belkin F5U541. Then simply connect a SCSI cable from the scanner to the adapter & a Firewire cable from the adapter to your Mac. I'm using my old Umax Astra 2400S w/ a G5 iMac running OSX 10.6.7. I had to upgrade my old copy of VueScan, however, to run on Snow Leopard
You will not find drivers for this old scanner. Sorry but this scanner is not compatible with Tiger, Leopard, or Snow Leopard, and HP offers no drivers other than for OSx 8.0 & 9.0 which are 10 years old. Time to purchase a new scanner.
Not likely to work reliably if you get it to work.
The parallel port must be set to communicate in both directions. The SUB to Parallel adapter may be a ONE-WAY communications device.
Get a new (or used) Epson scanner or Epson all-in-one ($50) which includes a scanner and printer! Your new computer may not have the proper drivers for your old IBM scanner, anyway. If you purchase an Epson all-in-one, get a "WorkForce" model - that's their latest product line.
I also had this problem and scoured ALL the apple forums to no avail. Then I discovered what my problem was. I run parallels on my mac and it had nabbed my scanner as one of its USB devices! All I had to do was uncheck this device for use in the windows Virtual machine and it came back to mac. The strange thing was, I didn't use or install the scanner in the windows environment, yet parallels stole it from the macOS side. If you have Parallels installed, I wonder how many other problems with USB connected devices could be solved by visiting it first?
