I need to know what hooks on the back of the TV into the mother/sister to provide regular TV. Some sort of converter? Which kind?

The Protron PLTV-32 only has an analog tuner (NTSC). So you need a digital to analog converter to watch OTA programming. A basic d-t-a converter will give you Standard Definition output (480i) (either on the TVs antenna in or the composite in inputs).

Since the TV can show a high definition signal (720p), you could also use an HD tuner set top box. However, these are significantly more expensive than the $40-70 SD converter boxes that were sold for purchase with the government coupon last year. Alternatively you can use a DVR with a tuner as your set top box (computer with a tuner card) to the VGA or DVI inputs on the TV.

I hope this helps.

You can get a replacment from the maker of the digital converter. You will need to mail in the old unit but they will send out a replacement

Since the switch to digital transmission, my antenna no longer works with my Trutech 19 inch TV. What kind of antenna do I need to buy in order to get reception?

to add to what MIKEY-MOORE wrote, OUR government was offering discount ($20 off a $40-$45) coupons on a digital converter box that you can use your original antenna ( I still use my original nineteen and 65 (1965) rabbit ears antenna) to receive the digital signals NOW being transmitted through the air. In order to receive the signals YOU MUST get the converter. GOTO any Radio Shack, Walmart, to acquire the converter box. You will need one for EVERY tv in your house. I have a HDTV (but not digital) and I had to buy 3 boxes.

Connection for y pb pr cables

The color-coding used for the RCA connectors is nearly universal:
  • composite video - yellow
  • audio - red (right channel) and white (left channel)
  • component video - green (Y), blue (Pb) and red (Pr)
Also, these jacks are normally labeled in print as well, although it's sometimes hard to read the text on some equipment.

Match the connectors on your converter box to the corresponding connectors on the TV. If your converter box was one purchased with the $40 US Government coupon, it may not have the component video outputs. The only coupon-eligible boxes are the most basic models, and they sometimes have only RF (channel 3 or 4) and composite video outputs available.

About Sylvania TV

Hi malumbender,
Your tv dosn't have a digital tuner, in order to recieve OTA (over the air) digital signals you will need a Digital Converter Box.
Here is a link to a government website for coupons for the box. The coupons are for $40 off the purchase price of the box. There is a waiting list but they will come available as other coupons expire.
https://www.dtv2009.gov/

here is another site for antenna and channel line up.

I hope this helps and please rate this solution, please keep in mind that a "Thanks For Trying" rating is negative.

What do I need to do to get ready for the Digital TV transition?

Hi perplexa, I am happy to help. With an old tv that only has a analog receiver you will need to buy a Digital Conversion Set Top Box, this a device that is able to receive digital signals, the cost of thew box runs from $40 to several hundred dollars, the basic box is all you need though, it comes with a remote and several different ways to connect it to your tv. Fortunately the government is offering coupons for $40 dollars off the price of the boxes. That's the good news, now for the bad, The funds for the coupons have been exhausted, you will now have to put your name on a waiting list and wait for already issued coupons to expire. Here is a link to get on the waiting list. https://www.dtv2009.gov/
Once you receive your coupon, it can be redeemed on line or at a local store eg: Walmart. You will also need a antenna which I assume you already have and you are set to watch Digital TV. If you need information on antennas go to this site. http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/welcome.aspx
Enjoy your digital experience and let me know if I can provide further assistance. Lone99star

Will the JVC TV model AV-27820 mfg 1997 become obsolete i n February?

It will still work fine if you have cable or satellite. If you are using an antenna to receive broadcast signal you will need to get a digital converter box from an electronics store like Best Buy. You can get discount coupons from the federal government good for 40 dollars towards the converter. Google "Digital Covnverter Coupon Program" and it should give you a link to the site to apply for up to 2 coupons.

Best wishes

DVD Recorderwith/without Tuner

I would get one with the tuner so they can watch something else while they record. Also unless they have a brand new tv, it will not work the way the have it set up as of February. They can either get a cable box or, there is a digital converter they can buy for around fifty bucks. but you can get a 40 dollar coupon from the government. You can go here to order the coupon http://www.ntia.doc.gov/dtvcoupon/ Hope this helps.

Salutation TrudyK,

Great question! First think to know is that if you are getting your programing from a cable or satellite provider a digital converter box would not be needed. These services are not being required to change their signals. If you use rabbit ears or an antenna a digital converter maybe required.

Looking at the specifications of your televisions they all appear to have analog tuners which would need digital converters to receive the new digital broadcasts.

Thankfully the FCC does have a program in place to offer coupons to assist in purchasing the new converter boxes.

For more information on the digital transition and coupon programs BestBuy.com has a FAQS, wuizzes and tutorials available at http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcmcat120600050013&type=category
