Question about HP Compaq Presario V6000T Notebook

Compress old files too large

When I perform disk cleanup my compress old files is 1,207,122--my laptop has become very slow--I am afraid to delete them. I do have a separate drive that I can save files on. Is there anyway these files can be saved to that drive and free up space on my computer? If so how do I do that?

It doesn't actually delete anything when you select Compress Old Files. It actually searches your hard drive and anything that hasn't been used for so many days (forgot how many). This is ok if you need more hard drive space but if you have enough space, you should not use this tool. It will severly slow down your computer while accessing those files. For information on how to disable this, go :

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;310312

If your laptop is slow it probably needs some maintenance like:

Removing Cookies.Temp files. TIF's with CCleaner
Installing ScrubXp to automatically remove such files.
Running Defragmenter in Safe Mode

Also, download and install WinPatrol,Ad-ware 2008 and SpyBlaster.
AVG Anti-virus is great protection against viruses and Trojans
Programs mentioned are free. Defragmenter is part of OS.
MyComputer,C:drive,Tools. defragmenter.

My system is running slow

Slow computer If you have a virus program installed, it is most likely is running a scan on your hard disk. It can slow down your computer especially if you have a large hard drive. After scanning is completed then the computer will be faster.
To make your computer (hard disk) lean and mean, uninstall any programs you do not use.
Also you need to maintain your hard disk by running Disk Cleanup this will remove old temp files and old compressed files etc.
This will reduce the number of files the virus scanner has to scan. Plus running Defrag. this makes your files contiguous so the system can access files off the hard drive quicker because it does not work as hard.. Disk Cleanup and Defrag should be carried out at least once a month.
If you have 512Mb of RAM installed then installing more RAM will speed up your computer. After installing your graphics card, you may need to disable the built-in graphics card in the BIOS for the new graphics card to work properly.

My laptop has 384MB and I have Windows XP. My laptop is still verym vert slow sometimes messaging me that the virtual memory is low and it need to increase it. I surf the internet, facebook, word,...

You should have at least as much disk space available for virtual memory (swap) as you have physical memory.
So, if you have 2GB of RAM in your system, then you should have at least 2GB set aside for as swap on your system.
In your case, it seems that you have 512MB of RAM on your system. This is your problem. You need at least 2GB of memory on a Windows XP machine in order to have smooth operation. Also, freeing-up disk space on your system is necessary. 384MB is just not sufficient.
Run the disk cleanup utility under "Start » Select Programs » Accessories » System Tools » Disk Cleanup" and have it clear out temporary files and compress old files. Additionally, clear the cache on your web browsers(s) and finally delete or burn to CD any large unneeded files.
Also make sure to empty your Recycle Bin.
Once you've done this, then run the disk defragmenter:
"Start » Select Programs » Accessories » System Tools » defrag"
and allow the system to defrag your C: drive
All of these actions will significantly improve the performance of your computer.

I am having a problem with movies and games. The games and videos run choppy and they didn't before.

Perform all the regular computer maintenance on this laptop.
To run the Disk Cleanup tool
a) Click Start, and then click My Computer.
b) Right-click Local Disk and then click Properties.
c) On the General tab, click the Disk Cleanup button. Disk Cleanup will spend a few minutes examining your disk.
d) The Disk Cleanup dialog box will appear. Select each of the check boxes; Offline Web Pages, recycle Bin, Temporary Files, but, do not select Compress old Files in the Files to delete list, and then click OK.
e) When prompted, click yes. Disk Cleanup will spend several minutes removing these files, which will provide you with more space.

run Defrag on the drive

Clear all of the Internet cache

Check your free disk space. It needs to be larger than 15% of your hard drive.

During gamplay halo will slow down after 2 to 5 minutes it will go back to normal

awigle

In regards to your game slowing down most likely you are running into a resource/preformance issue on your computer.

First thing I would do is clear all your temp files. Your can do this by right clicking on my computer and then selecting properties.
Next click on Disk Cleanup. In Disk Cleanup make sure that all the check box are check except "Compress old file" (You can do this later if you want. Plus it can take as long as a defrag). Next click on OK, now all the temp files are getting removed.
Next go to the Tools tab and click on Defragment now and left click on Defragment button to defrag you computer. Note if you get an alert that you have less than 15% of free space on your drive this may point to the fact you do not have enough free space on the have drive for the virual memory to run properly. This too could be causing the game slow downs. If this is the case you will want to look at deleting unused games and programs from your system to free up some space.

After the defrag runs then you can go back and run "Compress old file" in disk cleanup. Note if you did uninstall any programs it will be a good idea to go back and rerun the defrag again to cleanup an fragmented files on the system.

Now at this point if you still have trouble you will want to look at your memory. If you have Windows XP you will need atleast 1gig of ram and if you have Vista or 7 you will need 2gigs of ram.

Hope this helps

When logging on error message telling me disk nearly full delete files etc

This message means the hard disk is nearly out of disk space.
Do you regularly do a Disk Cleanup and empty the Recycle Bin? These disk maintenance chores will free up disk-space by removing old temporary and compressed files. Therefore returning disk space for further use.
To do a Disk Cleanup follow these steps. This can take hours to complete, it depends upon the size of the hard disk especially if it has not been done before.
Click on My Computer - right click on the C drive and click on the Disk Cleanup button. After it analyzes the hard disk then click all the boxes to recover the maximum disk space, click OK then YES to perform these actions.
