I have done everything suggested by Garmin tech support to make more room on my unit. I have deleted voice files, text files, and jpegs. However the preloaded jpegs still show up on my Garmin. No matter what I try I can't create more room for another map. Is it possible to delete the current map? Should I just reset my system? I'm stumped!

Connect the Nuvi to the PC with the supplied USB cable. After about a minute, the computer should recognize the Nuvi under Windows and assign it a drive letter. Double-click on the drive letter and view the directory in the Nuvi. Look for a subdirectory labeled "Garmin". Double click on the Garmin subdirectory. Look for the file named "gmapprom.img". This is the map file. This will be a very large file, around 1GB. I would suggest making a backup of this file on your PC in case a future map upgrade fails. Once the file is backed up you can go ahead and delete it. You have now freed up memory for a new map. You can also delete unused voices in the voice subdirectory. to free up additional memory.
You can attach the unit to your computer and then delete some information like extra voices, languages, help files, pictures, etc. You can also delete from the gps menu old locations and favorites. Make sure you make a copy of everything first before you delete anything. Thanks for using FixYa

****HELPFUL HINT**** Before you do anything with the Garmin unit, you might want to make a folder somewhere on your computer and name it something like NUVI CONTENTS. Then copy and paste or drag and drop, however you want to do it, all the contents of your NUVI. This way if you do something you didn't mean to, like delete a language, you can just put it back in.
Now what you need to look for are 3 folders, one is the HELP folder which is pretty useless once you get the hang of the Garmin unit. As a matter of fact I never even used the HELP button on the Garmin unit, because it's so easy to use.
The other folder is the VOICE folder, open it and start deleting the languages you are not likely to use or need. Make sure you DO NOT delete American English, unless you want to stick to British English. Of course I am assuming you need English, but regardless it goes for whichever language you want to keep. Assuming you are keeping American English these are the names of the files you need to keep in the VOICE folder english_american_.sum and English_American_.vpm.
The last folder is the TEXT folder, open it and delete all the files if you want. American English is the default so it won't go away, but regardless you'll have a back up anyways...RIGHT? LOL
I hope this helps you, and if you have any questions lay them on and I'll see what I can do for you. But I will say that I just bought my Nuvi back in April of this year so I am still learning a lot about it. I am working on tweaking the XML file so that it will ready more than 1 map on the SD, right now we are limited to 1 map per SD card.
Connect your unit and navigate to the directory under "My Computer" where your GPS is located. Usually called Garmin. Open it and find the file called voices. Delete all of them except the American one and it will give you more than enough room to load the new map.
Take a look at the Garmin support page - there is a Question " Why do I get a not enough space message on my Nuvi2xx when trying to update my mapping?"
It tells you how to remove the unused voice files to free up space.
I have a Nuvi 255WT and deleting the voice files alone was not enough, so I set about removing a lot of other stuff *** NOTE THAT IF YOU FOLLOW WHAT I DID, DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK **** it worked for me but there is always the risk of deleting a file that the device needs.
Also I was stupid and didn't try and save the files to a directory on my MAC before deleting them, from the satnav - worth a try so that if you can do that you have a chance of recovering one that you delete if you want it back.
First I also removed the un-needed text files - leaving only the 3 British-English files
Then I removed all of the POI files that were clearly examples/samples
Then I removed all of the Vehicle files except the one I was using
Then I removed all of the large ExtData files - now that was the one that caused me the most worry as I wasn't certain what they were there for!
This gave me a bit over 140Mbyte of free space which was enough to install the 2010 update for all of Europe.
Now I don't know whether the C510 has the same amount/less/more memory than the 255WT - so this may or may not work for you.
I didn't have an SD card available, which is why I went this far. I am going to get one and see if I can find out how to load the maps onto that.
cheers - Jeremy
Here's what worked for me. Nuvi 200 brand new w/2008 trying to upgrade to 2009.
After registering and download the map 2009, I started the install. I go to a point where I was told I needed 37MB more room. I went thru windows explorer and looked in the Nuvi. I went into the language folder and moved all of the languages I didn't need to my hard drive. I then went into the HELP folder of the Nuvi and again removed the all of the languages I did not need. I then went back to the install program and hit retry. All good from there. I hope this helps.
If you deleted the voice files without backing them up you can try running the Garmin WebUpdater software. This program updates the operating software for your GPS and can be used to update maps and other files. It may be possible to reinstall the voice files using WebUpdater. (To download the WebUpdater software go here.)
Some of the Garmin products do have voice files available for download via the Garmin website. (Namely the Quest product.) However the Nuvi 200W does not appear to have such files immediately available for download.
If you aren't able to update the voice files this way I would suggest you give Garmin a call directly.
