I did post to this already. If you didn't see it,.... Most likely the seal dried out and is sticking. Pour a quart or so of hot (not boiling) water in and let it set for a few minutes. Then restart dishwasher. If motor still just hums, see if you can access the motor shaft to manually turn it to break the seal free. If you get it going this way (most likely will) just remember to run the dishwasher for a quick rinse every week or two even if you don't have a load to run through it. That will keep the seal lubricated. If you will be away for an extended period of time (several months), try to add a couple cups or RV antifreeze in the tub. If this helps, please list it as a "Fix Ya", thanks.

Hello Tom Weiss, There are a couple of things to check.
1. Check connection at the dishwasher. It is possible that the wire nuts came lose. Re-tighten and wrap with electrical tape to secure.
2. Check for a small leak from sink or faucet this has also been the culpret before.

more than likely something is sticking in pump, remove access panel and reach into motor opening and try to turn motor over by hand if you can (using motor cooling fan blades) .This problem happens more often if machine is used seldom

Have you got your dishwasher on an extended drying cycle?

Normally it works for about 10 minutes after the wash cycle is complete - not hours.

This may be the smell of Varnish used in motor winding. When we turn on the machine it gets heated a little bit resulting in a burning electrical smell.

Hi bnedict,

I'm Harvey the Master Plumber.

Your statement didn't include a question so we'll assum you want to know if you should repair it.

If it has a few years on it, it's my opinion that repairing it is like throwing good money after bad. I would seriously recomend replacement.

Most likely the water evaporated and the pump seal dried out, causing it to stick. Try pouring a quart or so of hot (not boiling) water into it, letting it set for a few minutes, then starting it. If the motor still just hums, with some brands you can access the motor shaft or cooling fins under the motor and break the seal free by turning the motor shaft by hand.
