My college son's Presario V5000 laptop had a virus and had to undergo complete recovery. Prior to this he had wireless access, but now the laptop doesn't appear to be wireless any longer.

No partion / no recovery disks how to get windos back on

Check WWW.HP.COM Support Drivers and Downloads. A lot of help there. Also, check around the college IT department, most of the students are going to have MS TechNet subscriptions and access to a lot of tools that will help.

I have a friend's Presario C700 Vista laptop that has failed for the 2nd time. I found a vista recovery at Bit Torrent that worked the first time and helped the computer perform a checkdisk to find missing...

Guess she didn't buy it new because in Canada the boot disks must be provided provided with the purchase of a new computer. If she bought it new and didn't get one, tell her to get it from the dealer free of charge. (I assume those laws are the same elsewhere).

Has she got the instructions for the computer at least? A lot of laptops have an emergency recovery process built in so the computer can often be recovered by hitting one of the higher function keys like F10 or whatever.

If you're using programs like Bit Torrent, you may need the real disks quite often because you are accessing good hotbeds for viruses.

If she bought it second hand, she should do whatever she can to get it from the person who sold it to her, although that person wouldn't be under the same obligation to give it to her as a store would be. Likely the person no longer has a need for it anyway.

It's not a good idea to buy any computer from anyone without asking if the boot disks will be supplied and if they have a receipt showing the legitimate proof of purchase. Often what seems like a good deal can be a bad one in the end if things those questions aren't asked first.

Compaq presario v5000

Boot into Setup and run the TOOLS / PRIMARY HDD TEST / SHORT TEST.

If it fails, try another HDD.

If OK, verify Boot Order is Floppy, CD-ROM, HDD. Exit Setup.

Print Table 1 Low Level Format instructions from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/106419

Boot with a DOS disk that contains Debug. Run the Table 1 script. Turn V5000 Off.

Boot with the HP Operating System CD. XP install should now proceed normally.

Good luck.

Laptop problems

A few months ago was the peak of Windows Virus Season, so it's likely you picked up one or more. I have seen viruses this season that denied your browsers to access the interned though some of the computer's resources still had access.

Run a full virus scan in safe mode with your up to date Anti-Virus program. If you don't have Anti-Virus and a running Fire Wall, I suggest you do after you format and do a clean install of Windows.

Good luck.

Compaq Presario v5000 won't turn on

If the laptop posts: (power on self test) and you see stuff on the screen, no matter how short ,do the following:
if you have a bootable anti virus disc use it to check for any viruses , if not
try a recovery disc,
both will try to access the hard drive.
if they do not work,(nothing has changed) nothing comes on the screen.
laptop does not post:
remove the screw(s) holding the cover plate where the ram lives
remove the memory sticks, clean the gold edges with a pencil eraser both sides and re-insert them, (not an ink eraser as it will do damage)
swap them around if you have more than one,
if you only have one, borrow one from a friend or try the ram in your friends laptop ,if that's possible, or take the ram to your local pc shop and ask them to check it for you (they may or may not do that for you)
if you can establish that the ram is ok, and anti virus and recovery disc's do not work, then it is most likely, the motherboard has failed .
good luck with that and let me know how you get on.
