Re: how to use
First take the large tank out open the top of it and place hot water in the small round opening, than put the lid back on and set the tank firmly back in place, then take the small shampoo resivour and fill that with only genuine bissell shampoo ( if you dont it could ruin the machine !!!! ) then theres a small knob near the small tank adjust that to regular or heavy traffic if its really bad.

You probably have a solenoid valve which has failed and will not open. This will require replacement of the valve. For temporary use you can mix a soap solution and put it in the rinse tank. The correct mix is 5 ounces of Hoover shampoo to a gallon of hot water.
1. Step on the handle releae pedal and lay the handle back.
2. Remove the tank and take it to thesink.
3. Remove the top cover cover and fill the plastic bladder with water only.
4. Replace the tank.
5. Your 'Smart Mix' (shampoo) bottle is on the operator's right in front of the machine. Remove it and fill it with Bissell shampoo.
6. Shampoo is automatically mixed with the water as you dispense it depending on how your 'Smart Mix' Knob is adjusted.

I have a Bissell Dirt Lifter that has the giant clear store compartment that you supposedly put the water in? Do i mix the soap in with the water in this compartment or is there another location where i add the soap.. We have looked the machine over and see no other place to really put the soap... will it ruin the machine if we just add the soap with the water in the detachable compartment?
Hello, I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. According to your description you do mix the water with the Bissell soap in order to dispense the solution onto the spot, it will not ruin the machine if you mix the water and soap together. You may want to refer to your owner’s manual and check out the trouble shooting guide for no water coming out. You may want to contact the factory or manufacturer to see if they have service tech support or to send out a new owner’s manual for your current model #. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions. http://www.bissell.com/By Phone Customer Service: (800) 237-7691 Hours: M-F 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. ET Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. ET Don – The Vac Man Go Ahead.Use Us.
Does water squirt out of the hose nozzle, if it does, then check the heater inside the handle asm. Make sure that where the tubes hook up to it are not clogged. If water doesn't squirt, check for the seal at the bottom of the tank, it needs to be on the tank, not in the hole, this is for the soap bottle, there is a seal on the bottom of it as well. The flow indictor cap is leaking air or maybe is too tight. If you had the top cover off, make sure that the tubes are routed right so as not to get pinched when the cover is put back on, the smart mix knob should be in the water setting and that the piston is on the bottom of the smart mix knob. Pump is bad. Try running a mix of vinegar and water to see if that unclogs the lines. Is the top cover and the base tight together in the back, sometimes the top breaks loose and it will raise up and it can't spray, just refasten it down.
If the mix valve knob is turning smoothly, then most likely the cap and valve for the sop bottle is bad. Also make sure that the seal is on the cap at the bottom of the bottle and not sitting in the hole.
You are supposed to buy the Bissell soap. On the bottle depending which cleaner you need. The directions are on the bottle. Please do not use house hold cleaners because you can cause serious damage to the vacuum.

Does liquid squirt out of the hose. If it does then probably the heater inside the handle asm. is clogged. Take out the two long screw that hold the top handle on and remove it, then near the bottom of the handle, near the bottom are 2 more screw to remove. Then the front of the handle asm. will come off, pull the 2 tubes off of the heater and check the inlets to make sure they are open. It gets clogged up from calcium from saop deposits, but when you are down with the machine, run vinegar and water mix thru to clean out the lines before you put it away. Let me know if this doesn't fix your problem.
