-   How do I reset the DVD player?  That was one of the solutions posted.  Is it as simple as unplugging over night?  As a hand me down from parents, I was lazy and left it in the car for several months (shame on me).  Now that I finally decided to bring it inside to use after plugging in the DVD player it shows the red standby button.  When you push the on/standby button, it remains red.  Sometimes it looks like it is trying to start (no noise) with the center screen on the DVD player showing ---(division symbol)---. Can't seem to get the DVD tray to open either.  Any suggestions? -   jiggly_foam

Your problem is the small switch that a small boss hits when the doors closed to tell the unit the door is closed.. Its eather the small boss is broken from the door or the switch blades cracked. If you feel comfortable to open small electronics you may be able to open and see if it is the tiny switch BUT highly NOT recomended as there are micro fine wires and ribbon cables inside this unit that can be easaly broken.Best thing to do is to take or send this unit to an authorized repair shop.

Have you tried to power cycle the unit? These units have small computers in them and from time to time need a power cycle. Un plug it and let it sit over night then try it again. Some times a simple reset can cure its ilness.

It may also have a timming problem with the door. WHen it was open did it get bumped? it could be off track and thing its open when its actualy closed because it has a timming problem. Try a power cycle first.

I just purchased a dvd hd player phillips dvp5960/37 I also own a 37 inch panasonic tv. I can see normal movies ok and sound is good but when I put an HD movie in I get nothing but spinning. This happened with another dvd player that I bought and I figured it was a problem with the DVD player so I bought a different one which is the phillips. Does anyone have a clue as to why I cannot play an HD movie on this thing. I also have a bell satellite dish and it plays the television HD channels fine. ???? im confused!!!

I too am having a simliar problem with my DVC880D. Were you able to resolve?

$35 to just have a local repair look at it, and that's not including parts. For that price, I'm half way to a newer unit (and anything other than a SYLVANIA).

- I did power down. That was the initial resolution Sylvania's support gave me. Did not work.

I've opened the case to see if I could isolate the problem, but I have no idea what I'm looking at. If it was a computer DVD drive, then I'd be good to go :P

I'll play with the dead one to see if I can get it working, but I'm not too concerned now. For the price they want to just to look at it ($35) I bought a new RCA DVD with DIVX.

Note to self: Never buy Sylvania.

Not sure if this is the same issue but when disc tray retracts I can hear the disc drive cycling. I opened and inspected unit and found that the rubber band used to retract then raise the disc drive into place was slipping. Evidently it has stretched and starts to slip when trying to raise the drive unit up into place. Anyone know where I can get the rubber band.

CD works fine but DVD it only shows after how many seconds then it shows on the screen DISC NOT AVAILABLE please tell me if this is goodbye or tell me what parts need to be replaced and how much. Thanks

I opened up the dvd casing, and saw a plastic bar trapping the CD under it. I can't see any small switch. Previously have already switched the power on and off but still no movement.
