I have the same problem. Brand new batteries. Switch on camera, the lense extends, and after a half second the camera simply switches off. Sometimes the viewfinder shows the picture for a second, and flashes battery low. Mostly it just switches of.

The lense is not retracted when it switches off, however, this can be done by turning on to view pictures mode, and waiting a few seconds.

I have the same problem, and I am getting very frustrated. There must be someone out there with a solution, or at least had the same problem and can guide us to a solution to this. Thanks Ray

I had the same problem with some rechargeable batteries, although i was getting about 5 minutes out of them before the camera went dead. Then i tried Non-Rechargeable batteries and was getting about 600 full res shots (12M F) before batteries needed replacing. Haven't used rechargeables since.

Why won't my Fujifilm Finepix S7000 turn on, even after I put new batteries in?

Verify batteries are fresh and of correct type, batteries and terminals are clean. If a rechargeable, verify battery and charger are good. Otherwise, camera may need servicing.

My s7000 batterries do not last very long i am wondering if something is draining them down

PRESS RELEASE
Release Date: 12 January 2004

Fujifilm today announced that a number of early FinePix S7000 Zoom digital cameras may experience battery power depletion when used with some CompactFlash™ memory cards.

This fault does not occur when the S7000 is used with either an xD-Picture Card™ or a Microdrive™, nor does it occur in any other Fujifilm products that offer a CompactFlash™ storage facility, such as the FinePix S2 Pro, S602, S602 Pro or M603.

Cameras with serial numbers above 34L60001 (inclusive) were produced after 15 December 2003 and therefore will definitely not experience this battery drain problem.

In the short term, the problem can be avoided by unloading then re-loading the batteries just after the camera is switched off. The camera's power supply will then perform normally.

I have a "S7000 Finepix Fujifilm' camera and it

Okay I hope you have found a fix for your problem but if not what I suspect has happened is the Focus mode Selector has been shifted to a manual mode. Page 21 of your manual here is a screen shot of the selector switch

Power on to take picture, but view finder is dark, and snapping a picture, provides a black picture.

Hi!
Probably the CCD is dead. It's a well known problem with S7000. It's a hardware problem, the CCD has to be changed. For S7000 it usually comes with the lens and it makes the repair quite expensive. It's about 250-300$ here. You should contact your local Fujifilm service center.
I work in a camera service center authorized by Fujifilm.

Sorry for the bad news!

My S7000 has the message "card not initialized"

The S7000 cannot handle cards larger than 2GB.
If you need 4GB you can also fit a 2GB type 2 compact flash card which is the american standard.
For europe you will get a type 1 card this will also fit it is just slightly thinner.

The batteries were drained in my FinePix S7000 camera whthe camera was not in use.

The CompactFlash card may have caused the batteries to drain. Some solid state CompactFlash cards consume power while inserted in the FinePix S7000 even if the camera is turned OFF. Fujifilm recommends removing the CompactFlash card when the camera is not in use. Microdrives and xD-Picture Cards do not exhibit this problem.
