Re: LCD is showing wierd colours and patterns

Sounds like you have damaged the LCD. The LCD is made of 2 sheets of glass and then there is a liquid between the sheets that carry light. Sometimes the glass can crack and the liquid will leak or bleed and then the unit needs a replacement LCD. An impact can crack the glass, dropping it or freezing the unit. A damaged LCD is common because they are so small and thin you cant push on them. A used LCD runs about $40. labor may be a bit more if this is the problem. People buy broken cameras on e-bay it maybe cheaper to get a different unit. If its under warantee you may be able to sxchange it. On the bottom of your camera there is an A/V port you can hook the unit to a tv. To verify the screen is damaged hook it to a tv and see if you can see an image on the tv in record or review mode and see if the LCD and the tv view are the same. You could still use it if the LCD is damaged but you will need another way to view the menu. I have done this

Image saves as random purple/ green patterns

Your CCD chip in the camera is defective. There is a lot of information on the web regarding this phenomenon. Here's a link to much of that info,
Note that the info is getting a little outdated now, as this problem has been identified and rectified. It only appeared in cameras that are now about six years old.

Weird picture in viewfinder

The discoloring problem is quite common, but its hard to tell from your post what?s the degree of the defect. Unfortunately the LCD screen washing out in bright sunlight is a problem on many digitals, and also streaking lines coming off bright areas. There are hoods that you can buy for the Nikons that will fix this problem. I don't have any links to them but they are not hard to find. If you think your problem is really too much to absorb, feel it can't possibly be anything normal, or have problems with the actual pictures as they transfer to a computer, I suggest you take it back to the store and say you're not satisfied with the product. Hope it turns out well.

Low Lite LCD Use

The LCD is completely WYSIWYG and if you can't see anything through the LCD then the picture you take will be black too. If you are outside and open the shutter really wide you will see the LCD go white as the light overpowers the exposure. The best thing to do is to increase the ambient light in the area by turning on every light. You will still use the flash for the picture but you need to get more light on the scene to see through the LCD. For what it is worth, an optical viewfinder probably wouldn't do any better job in those situations.
