Not normally but the black print head nozzles maybe blocked. Inkjet printers need to be used frequently to prevent ink drying out and blocking the print head nozzles. If the print head cleaning maintenance routine does not clear the blockages, then print head needs replacing, but it may be expensive. It may be more cost effective to buy a later model and better printer than replace the print head.
I will suggest you reset your canon printer, Follow this steps to reset your canon printer.
1. Turn off printer. 2. retaining button Resume/Cancel press button POWER - indicator it will catch fire by green color. 3. let go button Resume/Cancel, continuing to retain POWER. 4. press button Resume/Cancel of 2 times, retaining POWER, after which let go all buttons. 5. when indicator will be lit BY GREEN - press button Resume/Cancel of 4 times. 6. turn off printer by button POWER. Power on later to see what happens. let me know if additional information is required.

Could have a corrupt driver. Disconnect
the printer or at least be sure it is turned off. I'd do
both and when the CD software program asks you to connect the printer
to the USB port, do so and it should again work properly.
