Question about Intel Motherboard

1 Answer

Mainboard shutdown i pluged my laptop over the night, only to turn it on the next day but it will not come on. it only indicated that the battery was charging with the batt charging indicator led on when it was pluged. i checked the adapter and the wall socket every thing seemed ok. i opened the my laptop and after a series of random testings using a small digital meter on the components i found one small smd(surface mounting device)fuse on the board dead. i bridged it with a tiny wire and pluged it again hoping that was the only thing wrong and pluged it again. but this time the batt charging led did'nt lit on and the led on the adapter blinked. i felt it was a back voltage something definately was stoping the current from flowing therby returning voltage to the supply adapter.i removed the wire and replaced the dead fuse things went back to how they were before i had my hands on it. then i thought that fuse was not only component dead onthat board. before now i had done little troubleshootings like removing the cpu, changing the RAM making sure it was'nt a hardware thingy. finally i resorted to change the mainboard. but i thought it a nice idea if i could fix it ratherthan buying another of those expensive mainboards. this morning i browsing and found you guys could be of great help. what do i do next?

    hi saigua,

    thanks for ur fast responce.

it won't come on even with the power connected. rather it only indicated battery charging.

thank i get ur advise never trying things at ramdom again. i meant i was checking for only fuses on the mainboard as they were likely to be the most venulrable to current.

Never do that to fuses, search the web (especially the site of your laptop's maker) for common cures to your situation, and failing diagnosis recommending a particular cure, don't do stuff at random.  That sort of thing sort of sounds like a battery issue; won't the thing come on with no battery, but the power power connected?

Compaq pressario cq61 laptop wouldn't start.

If you had removed the battery while using the laptop, there is a good chance the laptop would still be working. A battery can fail in a number of ways, some of these could cause the power circuits to fail and kill your mainboard. The problem will be at a component level, electronics are very sensitive to stray voltage/current. Take it to a computer repair shop and they should be able to run a diagnostic the see if the mainboard has failed or not.

No video out

If you get a beep when you turn on the computer that means its working, multiple beeps indicate an error, no beeps at all mean that the processor is not initiliazing..

turn off computer and unplug it
1.) locate the jumper called or labled jp1
2.) its a 2 pin jumper and is currently set to 1 and 2
3) set it to 3 and 4
4.) set it back to 1 and 2
5.) try turning on the system

if you cant locate the jumper or yours is different what we are trying to achieve here is clearing the cmos. this can be done using the jumper or

1.) unplug your system
2.) remove the memory
3.) remove the battery
4.) press the power button 5 times to discharge the capicators
5.) replace batter
6.) replace memory

Try booting it now

if the above fails

try taking out your processor and putting it back in
if your mainboard has a clockspeed setting ensure it is set according to your porcessor clock speed (look at manual for details)

ensure you got all the necessary power cables connected

If you had the problem before you changed our processor then it night have been your mainboard that needs changing.

If you have a video card, ensure that the monitor is plugged into your videocard and not the onboard video the mainboard comes with.

Try your processor on another system to ensure its working, just cause it new doesnt mean it is good.

You can try clearing the cmos multiple times with the memory pluged in or without the memory to see if that helps

if all else fails then ensure you check the processor , only if the processor is good replace your main board..

Componenet failure Acer aspire 5920 I do not know if its a diode or capacitor. Anyway when I go to power on I get nothing. My power adapter light goes dim. Does anybody have any idea on how to identify the...

start up circuit problem, double check the output voltage on the adapter should be between 16vdc -20vdc, if ok connect a load to it example dc bulb/led or the battery of the laptop, if it remains on the adapter is ok, next check the laptop battery, remove it from the laptop and using a meter check the voltage and polarity.monitor the voltage to see if it is falling or holding,it should be holding, if all is well the next step is to check the voltage at the switch, this requires you to take apart the laptop to trace/test the voltage form the input to the battery to the mainboard to the switch and back to the mainboard. if the voltage is not present on the main board you will have to check the components to see which one is defective,if a protection diode it will be a very small component (smd) usually black in color and located close to the input will have to replace it,which will require some special tools and a lot of steady nerves.if a capacitor it will be brownish in color (smd)Surface Mounted Device.
Hope this helps

T41 appears to be dead. I see the power light but

Good day sir, there are several resons why a laptop wont power up, or wont display a thing.
  1. Memory is bad so make sure to check for memory module.
  2. The battery is bad, check you battery with other similar laptop.
  3. The power supply/charger is bad.
  4. There seem to be a shorted circuit board on your laptop ground chassis. For you to test it, you should dissassemble the laptop and one by one reassemble it again.
  5. Mainboard, sad to say if everything else fails, the mainboard is the last culprit. better visit your local service center.
hope this helps, please update me if you may have any progress report on your laptop, thanks

Wont power up!

May be the battery is dead (i.e. uncharged). Connect to an electric network and try once.
