We had the same problem and with research we found that this notebook has a history of this problem. The solution I found is to buy a USB mouse, plug it in, then go to control panel- mouse- hardware and disable the built in mouse. Then you just restart and use your USB mouse as your primary mouse. As to a solution to fixing the built in hardware, I don't think you can do that.

turn over the mouse and see if the is a cover around the ball and turn it counterclockwise this will release the ball dont lose the ball ok now look at the rollers and see if they are really dirty use a stiff object or even a toothbrush works well to get the lint off of the rollers make sure you clean all of them then put the ball back and put the cover back on and try it it swhould be better now good luck !!!!

Did you charge it for up to 8 hours?

Caring for your Compaq Evo N400c Laptop Battery You can improve the life of your Compaq Evo N400c Laptop Battery by doing the following:
When you first receive your laptop battery charge it fully for at least 6-8 hours and then discharge the battery fully by using your laptop unplugged from the mains until it runs down completely.

Repeat this 3 times to ensure your Compaq Evo N400c Laptop Battery will give you the maximum performance.

If you regularly use your Compaq Evo N400c Laptop on mains power for extended periods, removing the battery from your Laptop during these periods will extend the usable life of your laptop battery.

Mouse cursor moving by itself

In windows xp go into start menu, then into control panel then click on appearance and themes, then move your mouse over to mouse pointers click on it , uncheck "enhance pointer precision, and click apply, that will stop the mouse from acting crazy, this will work with dell mouse pointers and most.
