We had the same problem and with research we found that this notebook has a history of this problem. The solution I found is to buy a USB mouse, plug it in, then go to control panel- mouse- hardware and disable the built in mouse. Then you just restart and use your USB mouse as your primary mouse. As to a solution to fixing the built in hardware, I don't think you can do that.

Disable the joystick mouse in the center of the keyboard. Doubleclick Mouse in the Control Panel (Start/Settings/Control Panel). On the end tab, disable the thumbstick mouse. For my IBM Thinkpad, it's under UltraNav and I disable TrackPoint.
