Where to cables to hard drive go?

Usually the white connectors are from the power supply for additional plug-ins. If the Hard Drive has two cables hooked into it and you can trace one to the power supply and one to the motherboard then it is connected. If everything is connected, try a different connector from the Power Supply. If that doesn't work it could be the connecting cable from the HD to the mother board, or it could be the HD has failed.

You need to format your hard drive. Set your boot device to cdrom in your bios. Boot using xp cd.DO a reinstall of windows and it should give you the option to format or delete partitions on your hard drive. if that doesnt work try putting the hard drive in another computer to see if it works. Or you can buy a hard drive enclosure that allows you to use your hard drive as an external device.

I want to istall a new Hard drive, and I want to

Assuming you don't already have a second drive with an OS loaded then you will just need a boot disk or a Windows XP installation disc. Install the drive and then insert the CD. Power the PC on with the disk in the drive an you should get a message to boot from CD, just answer yes (note: the PC may boot automatically off the CD). If this doesn't work then you will probably have to go into the bios and change the boot order to make the CD as the first boot source. Entering the bios is different on each PC so, you will just have to find out the key sequence, usual buttons are ESC, F2, or CTRL+DEL.

You have to enter the BIOS and set the Boot Order on with how the computer is going to boot from. Stay alert when power on the computer and see what button to press. Sometimes is DEL, other is F1 or other key depending make, model, BIOS Manuf.

Boot Problem

Your Hard Drive is getting weak replace it with a new one , sometimes when it gets weak and get bad sectors it does not take up the OS and Boot bcoz the data written get lost so replace it or do the double check as follows

check ur hard drive is it showing u in Bios the main culprit is ur Hard Drive try re loading ur operating system by formatting ur hard drive otherwise Change ur Hard Drive it has become weak , there is a hard drive checking utility like HDDLIFE try connecting it to another desktop and scna it thru this software see the strength of the hard drive ur self download the trial version from website www.binarysense.com and let me know if it helps ,

basically if u computer boots ok and goes in bios when u press key that seems like ur whole pc is working ok incl RAM the only thing that is responsible for the operating sys is Hard disk it is where all files reside so when it crashes or get weak it doesnt give up files to boot so pc is unable to boot forward

pls do vote me if u find me helping and fixya problem

Compaq d540s hard disk upgrade

Jackwan -

Sounds like the boot record of the drive may be corrupt. When you runs the XP installation, you'll be given an option to start the Recovery Console. Go ahead and open that, should bring up a command prompt. At the prompt, type "fix mbr" (With the quotes removed). Select Yes or Continue when asked, and go through the repair process, then reboot the system and try installing Windows again.

*Note*
You might want to check first, make sure the jumpers on the hard drive are set to Master, or Cable Select, and make sure the drive is connected as Drive 0 on the Primary IDE channel.

Hope this helps!
