Are mp3 players in general only accessible via a pc? I have a mac-o.s. 10.4.5.
Can't seem to load the unit. When I plug it in it opens up a completely unrelated application, i.e. Kodakeasyshare or iPhoto.
Am I doomed to the return desk?

I don't think you should require anything. When you plug it in via the USB cord it should automatically install the necessary drivers. You will need Windows Media Player 10 or higher to load songs onto it though.
well, when my phillips will not go past the go gear screen its got a little lock symbol, which means its locked which means you cant turn it on or plug it into a pc/laptop and if u do it wont do anything that could be your problem.
Since this player is not MAC compatible - even though you can get SOME things to work, you are going to have a hard time getting those songs off there. How did they get loaded there in the first place? You will have to connect the GoGear to a Windows PC - may require reformatting, since it was last formatted as a MAC player (only if you have problems, though). And delete the songs using a PC.
Press volume + with the player disconnected from computer.
Continue holding volume + as you reconnect player to computer.
Continue holding volume + after you connect player to computer.
Windows will recognize it for what it is after 5 to 55 seconds and will say "Found Hardware Wizard" - go through re-installation.
Get the latest firmware upgrade after you are done by Opening Philips Device Manager - Click on Update Tab - this will prevent problem from recurring in future.
Note: if you have Windows Media Player 11, ignore everything I said. You must rollback to Windows Media Player 10, or this player will give you constant heartache.
