Question about MSI FX5500-TD256 GeForce FX 5500, (256 MB) Graphic Card
I have a nvidia Geforce FX 5500, i have been having a problem for some time. it is slowly getting worse. at least now i know what i can and cannot do to maintain normal operating. If i try to look at pictures or play a video the screen starts flashing. depending on which i am doing determines how badly. sometimes it is flashing so quickly that i cannot see what i am doing or it locks up the computer and my only option is to restart. when the problem first began i would play videos it will come up with the audio but no video will play. at one point the computer shut down on it's own and when it came back up it told me a serious error had occured with my video card and i needed to update. i did what windows recommended and it got worse. now if i try to watch a video it will just lock up or flash so quickly i have to restart. I tried downloading the drivers off the nvidia website. it didnt make a change to the situation. only to the resolution and settings. the computer tells me it can find no better matches for drivers. the windows troubleshooting tells me to lower the acceleration but when i do that, i get a pop up from one of the programs that it needs to be set at full to work properly. if you have any suggestions please let me now. this is driving me crazy. i am so tired or restarting all the time. also, i am able to create videos using my webcam, but i cannot view them myself. up until yesterday i had been able to email them to family and they had no problems watching them. yesterday one that was sent showed no codec and would only play audio.
Its not the symptoms of an overheating videocard, but you may want to check it. Open the computer cover and see if the fan of the videocard is still running smoothly. If it is not, you may want to change the fan of the videocard or place some oil as temporary solution(if you know how to). If it is running smoothly, try reseating the videocard. Symptoms of overheating videocards usually are discoloration, lines, garbage characters, hang-ups and restarts. Your case may be in its early stage, but if identified early, it can still be helped.

Looks like a faulty card. I have replaced it with a Sapphire ATI card and all is well. Pinnacle Media Center TV now shows upside down and back to front digital pictures, but that's another issue!

go to safe mode.
uninstall all video drivers
restart computer to bios screen.
disable other video card.in bios
shut down computer
restart computer and do not let windows install its own.

Hi jhacy, I went over all you're posted questions conserning this issue with the FX5500 video card. Please include the manufacture name of you're motherboard & its model number. It is possible the video card is bad (Even if it's new). There are settings in the motherboard bios that me need to be shut off if the motherboard has an integreated video card onboard. It's possible that the AGP slot on you're board is dirty & needs to be cleaned. Please list the name or name's of the games you have tried to run but freeze you're computer or crash you're system.
I will automatically recieve an email from fixya when you post the information I have asked for above. Untill than, take care!

try downloading " Driver Magician ". This searches for and updates all drivers on your system. There is a small fee for registration but this has been a God-send for me.

An avid gamer myself, I've had hard luck finding top games lists by model of graphics cards. There are a few online forums you can go to gleam info on how games are performing for a specific line of graphics cards. You might try the nZone Game Browser recommended by NVidea. Games listed on this site are said to be optmized for NVidea graphics technologies. But, you'll still need to check system requirements for each.
