yes, I want to restore my os to its factory settings,(if it will get rid of the administrator pass word). I let someone borrow a computer of mine and they changed the administrator password. They can't remember it so I can't get past the administrator log in screen. What do I do about this? Do I just forget it and throw the whole thing in the garbage? It is useless to me if I can't get any further than this. thanx

My problem is that I loaned my old computer (a 3year old dell dimension 2400 with windows xp) to a friend. They changed the administrator password but didn't realize it. I asked them the password and they said they never changed it. But I click on the password hint and the hint has changed so I know they changed the password. I can't get pass the administrator login page. It is still a pretty decent computer, but it is useless as it is. I don't know how to fix it. I have tried restoring it to the factory settings but it won't let me do that. I turn it on and hold the ctrl + F11 key down and it ask me for another pass word which I don't know either. This is the message I get when I go through these steps: "Primary drive 1 not found

    Type the password and....

    press to leave

I got to type something and it won't type anything in

then I get a message that says

    System halted must power down_

What do I do? thanx for your help

I am wanting to fix it to give to a mission that helps people get off drugs and helps them to learn skills. I wanted to donate it so that they could use it in their school to learn typing and different things. It is useless the way it is.

Is the operating system reinstallation cd the same thing as a recovery cd or recovery partition? That is the only cd I have. I have put it in my drive and turned the computer on while holding down ctrl + F11 keys. I still get the same message asking for a password and when I try to type something my keyboard doesn't type. thanx dawnsy

OS stands for Operating System. Windows XP is an example of an OS. When you reformat your hard disk this removes the operating system (windows) and all data contained on that hard disk or partition (usually the C drive) including your programs and documents, photos, videos etc. Is this what you want to do?

You need either a Recovery CD or Recovery partition. Most systems come with a disc marked Recovery. If you dont have one of these discs post back the model of your system and we can tell you whether it should have come with one.

My lexmark x422 does not activate. My previous OS was windows vista and the lexmark x422 was ok. Now my OS is windows 7 since i had to reformat and the lexmark x422 is not active.

As much I want you to enjoy your Lexmark X422 with your newly installed Windows 7. Lexmark company already discontinued this model and basically it will only works with Windows Vista. The printer does not support Windows 7 anymore, since there is no driver anymore for Windows 7.
I hope I answered your questions.
Thanks a lot!!

Hp Pavilion 6701 desktop with ME. Installed Xubuntu OS and removed ME. Want to reinstall ME but recovery disc won't work.

Hard disk needs to be reformatted--start machine and press correct key when "setup" appears in first dialog. Remove hard drive in first screen, then reinstall. Restart computer, should now say: "operating system not found". You need original Microsoft OS disk to reformat drive and reinstall ME. All previous information on hard disk will be lost with this procedure. Recovery disk is used with original OS before Ubuntu. If you don't have original MS disk, suggest going to XP.

My laptop was corrupted. what will I do? I cannot open it...DO I have to reformat it?

1. If you have OS, XP, or Vista you have to insert it and try to click repair. See it heals. If it doesn't you have 50/50 chance of retrieving files in your laptop.
2. If it can't be opened. try to run DOS and reformat drive. second option is insert OS for reformat.

If you want to reformat your pc be sure u back up all important file you have in your laptop. You dont need to worry about the OS because the OS CD is already included when you purchase your genuine laptop. Just look for the CD.
