Tv turns on but after about 30 min a popping sound is heard and it loses picture

main power source could be high due to a voltage regulator circuit malfunction or hv unit, focus devider starting to leak. Might be a good idea to have a qualified tech take a look at it, those hv components can get expenssive.

Focus not sharp

Yes, you can adjust the focus of the CRTs without causing other issues if you exercise some care in the process. There are two types of focus adjustments in your TV, electrical and optical. The electrical focus is more likely to change over time than the optical focus. That's because the optical focus is mechanical and would likely only need adjusting in the event of a CRT replacement. The electrical focus controls are located behind the front speaker grill and the front access panel. Pioneer TVs will either have pop-on/off connectors where all you need do is grab and pull, or it may have a few philips screws securing the grill. The screws are generally hidden behind the plastic molding strips just above the grill assy. (they are snap on/ pull off) There will be a small, black control assembly located behind the access panel. There will be 3 focus controls and 3 screen controls. The screen controls adjust the intensity of each CRTs brightness.

Good luck!

My samsung projection tv #pcl5415r don't want to perform perfect focus adjustments

perfect focus functions are based on service mode setup...or factory settings. if the alignment of these setting are loss then the unit wont perfect focus. does the unit have a complete loss of convergence. a complete loss of convergence indicate possible failure of convergence amps.

Pioneer 510-HD

EchoKaos may not have resoldered his PS board, which most units in that line need. This will most likely solve the problem. A virtually complete resolder is needed on that board, not just the obviously problem areas.

If not -

If the hor lines are upward and curved slightly and a couple of inches apart, then the blue Screen trimpot on the focus block is most likely turned up too high. When turned down the lines will disappear.

This mucks with your grayscale, but then it's trashed anyway by now, and after reducing it, you will have to do a new grayscale on your set, or have one done by ISF. Or a tech who knows how to set the Screen controls, since ISF does not teach that.
