Is hp deskjet 2460 a plug and play printer?

This is all HP recommends for the HP Deskjet 2460, so I wouldn't suggest buying anything else. First of all it might not fit and second, even if it fits, other issues may come with using those. If you can't see the list here it is:

here's how:
FOR WINDOWS XP:

1. Click Start .
2. Click Printers and Faxes folder.
3. Click File . Then select Add printer . NOTE: This step launches the Add Printer Wizard .
4. Click Next .
5. Uncheck the Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer checkbox.
6. Click Next . The Select a Printer Port window displays.
7. Click Next . The Install Printer Software window displays.
8. Select HP from the Manufacturer list .
9. Select hp deskjet 990C model from the Printers list.
10. Click Next . The Name Your Printer window displays.
11. If the printer name is correct, click Next .
12. Click Next . The Printer Sharing window displays.
13. Select No when the message Do you want to print a test page displays.
14. Click Next . The Completing the Add Printer Wizard displays.
15. Click Finish . NOTE: At this point, the driver installation portion of the process is complete.
16. Connect the USB cable to the printer and the computer. NOTE: Windows will start to Plug and Play the device.
17. Click Cancel for each Found New Hardware Wizard window that is prompted. NOTE: The number of Found New Hardware Wizard windows prompted by Windows will vary depending on the device plugged into the computer.
18. In the Printers and Faxes folder, click the hp deskjet 990c printer icon.
19. Click File . Then click Properties .
20. Select the Ports tab.
21. Scroll to USB00x Port and check the checkbox for the port.

Load the 2400 cd and then update online.
OR
Grab the latest software package for the 2460. Here

The HP deskjet number is a series number.
Meaning this software will usually work on 2400 series printers.
HP 2410, HP 2420 HP 2430 HP 2460 etc.

Put the cd
Plug the USB cable.
It will open up a Found new hardware wizard.
Click next next.The installation will be complete.

I found that turning the printer off, re-seating the print cartridges resolved this issue for me. Good luck.

Probably the only way, since HP is not supporting Windows 98 anymore, is to use the Add New Hardware Wizard and then choose Printers, scroll down the maker column until you get to HP or Hewlett Packard, in the right hand column choose a printer model number with four digits starting with a 1. This is called dumbing down and it often works pretty good. There may be some print features you will be missing but you should be able to print. If one doesn't work, try another until you get an old driver that does work. This is what HP would tell you if you paid for their help.

Usually the HP Deskject 970c works, or if you see a plain entry for HP Deskjet try that too. It really is an Easter Egg Hunt.
