Maybe the batteries were inserted wrong way ?
Sorry to tell you this but once you have taken the smoke out of the electronic device it is hard to put it back in.

Cheapest way is to purchase a universal remote control in this case.

You could open the remote and try to repair it but as it smoked it probably needs some parts.

Bought tv with remote and freeview box without, will I be able to switch channels with the tv remote

Yes you can; if the remote control is operative. Refer its user manual for details. Check the remote control for its infrared emission. Check it with fresh batteries. Check it by pressing all the keys. You can detect the presence of infra-red emission from the remote control, using a cell-phone camera. If you wish to get more details about how to check a remote control, please visit this site. One among the posts has details about it. In some cases, the remote control might need to clean.

HOW to view sky tv on ..

Hi.
Connect skybox using scartlead, or if you have HD use HDMI lead connection..
Select connection by using the AV (alternate video input) on your remote control--this will switch from freeview to sky.
Happy viewing.

Freeview

I think you are here in good old Oz?

Freeview is a collective advertising name for free-to-air stations, as opposed to Pay TV like Foxtel. So if you can already watch Ch 2, 7, 9, 10 etc etc through the STB you are watching Freeview.

About the only thing different in a Freeview STB from any other STB is that they disable any features which allow you to skip the advertising.

If you can't get a picture yet you should hook up the STB to the aerial as shown in the user guide, and then connect the aerial socket of the TV to the STB. Then turn it all on and select "Search" from the Menu on screen.

The STB should then find all clear stations you can get, and arrange them just as in the TV Guides.

Cant get freeview channels using one for all remote

Not all Universal remotes can work with your Freeview Devices. You need to find one that will work for your specific device AND your TV. Many Universal Remote Designs predate Freeview construction so a lot of them only have basic function. You need to Google the model number of your Freeview Receiver AND "Remote" to get a remote that will operate it.

Very common and yes probably irritating too. Sometimes technology just doesn't evolve as fast as others do. This is unfortunate. Wish you good luck!

20 year old Quasar colour TV (no remote)

That is because the switches of the front panel buttons are stuck or defective.

Try first unplugging power for ten minutes, this probably wont work.

To fix this the TV must be taken apart from an expert, and front panel replaced.

You can enquiry here for parts.

What you can do at home, is getting a replacement remote and using TV with a remote, or buying a freeview box, and watching and changing channels through the box.

You can get a replacement remote here: Replacement Remote Control orReplacement Remotes

My suggestion, if it is supported in your area, get a set top box with 30 channels : Freeview - digital TV from Argos.
